The Limbu Rai, Yakkha, and Sunuwar of the Kirat community are celebrating the New Year on Thursday.

Since the Sambat changes in the Kirati calendar with Maghe Sankranti, the Limbu community, who have reached the country and abroad after settling in eastern Nepal, celebrate the Kirati New Year with great pomp on Magh 1. According to the Kirati calendar, Kirati Sambat 5086 has started from Magh 1 this year.

During this season, the flowers of the Chaap species found in the high hilly areas start blooming. That is why the Limbu community calls Maghe Sankranti as Kakphewa Tangnam.

In the Limbu language, Kak means Chaap, Phewa means flowering, and Tangnam means season, i.e. Kakphewa Tangnam means the season when Chaap blooms. On this occasion, the eldest member or guardian of the family burns wild yam and blesses the members by applying tika, said Laxman Lawati, an expert on Kirati culture.

The Kirat New Year is celebrated as Kusang Yale Tangbe by the Limbu community and Yale Dang by the Rai community. Similarly, the Yakkha and Sunuwar communities also believe that the new year begins on Magh 1.

History experts say that the Kirat Sambat is 3,040 years older than the Vikram Sambat currently in use in Nepal. Legend has it that Yale Tangbe Sambat began to be celebrated after the Kirat king Yalambar began his reign. On the occasion of the New Year, various cultural programs have also been organized in Panchthar, Tehrathum, Taplejung, Ilam, Jhapa, Dhankuta and other districts.
