Mapya Dudhkoshi Rural Municipality has provided seven-day ritual training to Dalit community leaders with the aim of expanding access to religious rituals for disadvantaged communities.
The rural municipality has provided training in religious rituals to Dalit leaders as part of its annual program with the aim of eliminating caste discrimination.
Rural municipality chairperson Buddhikiran Rai said that the training was aimed at expanding the rituals performed only by the Brahmin community and making the Dalit community skilled.
In a context where the participation of the Dalit community in rituals has been low, chairperson Rai said that the rural municipality has conducted training targeting 11 people from the Bishwakarma community.
The participants, who were selected to represent all seven wards of the rural municipality, were provided with practical knowledge and skills related to birth, marriage, death rituals, festivals and various religious rituals. Chairperson Rai said that such skill-based training is important to end untouchability and religious discrimination in the society.
‘It was necessary to produce skilled religious manpower at the local level to solve the traditional problem of priests not visiting the homes of the Dalit community,’ said the municipal chairperson Rai, ‘We have done a completely new, creative and exemplary work.’
Municipal Vice-Chairman Gaurav Rai said that religious rituals are not the exclusive right of any one community and that the training was organized for the practice of equality, inclusiveness and social justice. The participants responded that the knowledge related to religious rituals increased their confidence through the training facilitated by local priest Krishna Prasad Ghimire.
