The National Independent Party (NISP) has announced engineer and party district president Birendra Shrestha as its direct candidate for the upcoming House of Representatives elections to be held on Falgun 21.

On Sunday, Shrestha's birthplace, Sirijanga Rural Municipality-1, Sinam, was announced as a candidate. The meeting of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) held on Saturday had decided to field Shrestha as a candidate.

It was not clear who would be the direct candidate while Kulman Ghising was in the RSS. According to RSS leader Yubaraj Baral, the meeting was held twice on Saturday. The meeting held at 11:30 am was attended by Kulman Ghising's supporter, Ujjaya Nepal Party district chair Pradeep Maden, central member Kirtiman Maden and others. The issue of the candidate was also discussed in that meeting.

'The meeting was adjourned to 5:30 pm after Kulman's supporter told them that he had not received any circular from the higher authorities,' said Baral of the RSS. ‘In the evening, our party left, after Kirtiman Dai called us to move forward, we made a unanimous decision to President Birendra Shrestha and moved forward.’ Baral says that the selection and announcement of candidates were made as per the instructions of the party center.

Shrestha himself and other party workers held a candidate announcement meeting from Panchami Bazaar in Sinam, Shrestha’s birthplace. Baral said that representatives of Genji also participated in the announcement meeting. Shrestha is an electronic engineer. He played a leading role in the production of 5 megawatts of electricity from Fawakhola while living in Taplejung, and 6 megawatts of electricity were produced from the Upper Fawakhola Hydropower Project under his leadership.

He has been responsible for the Kabeli A Hydropower Project and other projects. He was also a representative of the Nepali Congress Taplejung general convention, and he left the Congress and joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He is also active in the field of singing.
