Due to low visibility, no flights could take off from Biratnagar Airport on Wednesday. The airport administration has stated that the visibility was extremely low due to thick fog and clouds since morning, completely affecting the take-off and landing of aircraft.
According to Rajesh Jha, head of the Meteorology Station at Biratnagar Airport, visibility was only around 12 to 1400 meters in the morning. He said that visibility decreased further as the fog continued to thicken in the afternoon.
‘Flight could not be taken off since morning as the minimum visibility required for flight was not reached,’ Jha said, ‘No flight is possible today as the fog is likely to thicken further in the evening.’
Normally, flights at domestic airports like Biratnagar require at least 1600 meters of visibility. However, flights were stopped after visibility dropped below that standard throughout the day on Wednesday.
Passengers traveling from Biratnagar to Kathmandu and other destinations have been affected due to the lack of flights. Some passengers were forced to return after their flights were canceled even though they reached the airport in the morning.
Normally, more than a dozen flights operate from Biratnagar Airport daily. With the onset of winter, flights have been repeatedly disrupted at airports in the Terai due to fog and low visibility.
