Wild elephants damage three houses in Jhapa

Three houses, along with crops worth lakhs of rupees, were damaged in various parts of the district on Thursday as a herd of wild elephants entered the village.

The elephants destroyed the tin-roofed house of Ganesh Basnet in Bagale Tol, Kamal Rural Municipality-3, the kitchen of the one-story concrete building of Rishi Bhattarai in Danfe Chowk, Bhadrapur Municipality-7, and the tin-roofed kutchi house of Tanka Baraili in Kisanbhitta, Birtamod Municipality-8, informed Information Officer Khagendra Bahadur Khadka of the District Police Office.

Ganesh Basnet of Kamal-3 said that the three elephants that entered the house at night partially damaged the main house and completely damaged the kitchen. The elephants had eaten four maunds of rice and four maunds of corn flour in his house, while property worth one lakh rupees including clothes, household goods, and furniture were damaged, informed Information Officer Khadka of the District Police Office.

Police have reported that the destruction of Rishi Bhattarai's house and kitchen in Bhadrapur caused damage worth Rs 22,000, while the destruction of Baraili's house in Birtamod and the destruction of its crops caused damage worth Rs 45,000. According to Information Officer Khadka, the elephant broke the roof of a one-story thatched house in Baraili and entered the storeroom. The elephant ate eight quintals of paddy and one quintal of rice in the storeroom.
