A group opposing the construction of a cable car in the Pathibhara area has announced another protest program.
The group announced the movement at a joint press conference in Taplejung's Phungling Municipality and Lalitpur's Kirant Yakthung Chumlung Him on Friday. Programs ranging from meetings, processions to demonstrations have been announced.
From December 22, village gatherings and discussions will be held in various districts including all local levels of Taplejung, corner meetings will be held in all districts and main markets of eastern Nepal on January 12, public demonstrations and corner meetings will be held in Phungling Bazaar on January 16, those injured during the 'No Cable Car' movement will be honored on the 17th, and a thread will be hung from Kanchhithan in Pathibhara to the temple on the 18th.
A demonstration and corner meeting in the Pathibhara (Mukkumlung) area on the 19th and a campaign in the villages from 20th Magh to mid-July on the cancellation of the Pathibhara Cable Car and Pathibhara Area Development Committee formation order, and the cancellation of the cases filed during the protest for the protection of Mukkumalung have been announced.
Khagendra Fembu Limbu, Chairman of the Cable Car Cancellation Joint Struggle Committee, said that their only demand is the cancellation of the cable car through a cabinet-level decision. He has threatened that the construction company will not be allowed to operate no matter how much work it does. The statement of the protest program has been signed by 15 organizations and nine political parties.
On the political side, the signing ceremony was held by Rastriya Mukti Party Chairman Rajendra Mahato, Federal Democratic National Forum Chairman Kumar Lingden, Identity Front Coordinator Mahendra Lawati, JSP Central Executive Chairman Ramesh Rai, JSP Nepal Limbuwan National Committee Chief Secretary Sanjay Rai, Nagarik Unmukti Party Koshi Province Chairman Dhan Bahadur Pandhak, Nepal Janmukti Party Vice Chairman Bhakta Khewang, Mongol National Organization Chairman Nayandra Chamling, and Nepal Communist Party Kirat Limbuwan Province Committee Chairman Gajendra Palungwa.
On the part of organizations, Shree Prasad Limbu, coordinator of the Mukkumalung Conservation Joint Struggle Committee, Khagendra Phembu, coordinator of the Pathibhara Cable Car Abolition Joint Struggle Committee, Prem Yekten of the Kirat Yakthung Chumlung Federal Committee, Jeevan Hatacho Rai, chairman of the Kirat Rai Yayokka Central Working Committee, and Nanda Kandangwa, coordinator of the Limbu Sub-Organizational Facilitation Group, have signed the statement on the program of the movement.
Similarly, Dakendra Singh Thegim, coordinator of the Kirat Dharma and Literature Upliftment Association Central Committee, Ram Bhakta Kurumbang, general secretary of the Province No. 1 Re-nomination Campaign Committee, Gelje Sherpa, president of the Nepal Indigenous Peoples Federation, Ngimi Sherpa, president of the National Indigenous Peoples Women's Federation, Rajendra Idhingo, president of the Yakthung Youth Forum, Kiran Kumar Sigu, founding member of the Yakthung Cho:sangjumbho, Sagar Kerung, president of the Yakthung Munchait Chok Sayang, and Pradeep Neyong, general secretary of the Limbu Students' Forum, have signed the petition.
Representatives of all the constituents in favor of 'no cable car' were present at the press conference organized in Phungling. Another activist, Kirtiman Maden, said that they are not in favor of moving the location of the cable car up or down. He said that if any of the agitating constituents had raised the issue of moving the location up or down, it would be a personal opinion, but the institutional decision is to cancel the cable car. Fembu is also the coordinator of the negotiation committee of the protesting group formed with the previous government.
There have been repeated clashes at the cable car construction site before. The construction company is using armed forces and Nepal Police to carry out the construction. But it has not been revealed what percentage of the work has been completed.
