The situation in the Koshi rural municipality of Sunsari has become tense after local Vijay Sah was killed in a shootout with armed police.

The Armed Police Force deployed to investigate the smuggling operation opened fire on 45-year-old Shah last night. The encounter with the police took place while he was smuggling goods from the border area in two or three city safaris and auto rickshaws, claims DIG Kumar Neupane of the Armed Police Force Barah Bahini Pakali.

'Shah died in retaliation after those involved in the smuggling attacked the Armed Police Force team,' Neupane said. 'When they tried to stop him while he was illegally bringing goods from Indian territory, the police team was attacked and fired upon, resulting in one death.'

Laukahi Bazaar has become tense after angry locals protested, saying that the Armed Police Force 'murdered' Shah. They have blocked traffic by placing the body of the deceased Shah in the Laukahi Bazaar on the East-West Highway and set fire to the Armed Police Force's vehicle.

Locals have also pelted stones at the police, and the police have fired in the air to disperse the crowd.

Locals are demanding a fair investigation into the incident, action against the culprits, and compensation for the victims. Chandra Bahadur Khadka, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of the District Police Office, Sunsari, said that efforts are being made to open the blocked highway after holding discussions between the victim and the administration.
