The 'Fourth International Yam Festival' is being organized in Bahundangi, Mechinagar-4, Jhapa with the aim of conserving local crops, promoting organic and rural food culture, and expanding crops that can be protected from elephant damage.

According to Arjun Karki, ward chairman of Mechinagar Municipality-4 and coordinator of the festival organizing committee, the ward has been organizing the yam festival continuously for four years. Various varieties of yam, traditionally consumed by Nepalis of all communities and geographies, will be exhibited at the festival. Dozens of types of yams including house yam, forest yam, simal yam, and suthuni will also be available for tasting at the festival.

According to ward chairman Karki, this time, farmers and tourism entrepreneurs from India and Bhutan will also participate in the festival. The festival will be held for three days from Poush 30 to Magh 2.

Organizing committee member Niraj Ghimire said that the festival also aims to exchange experiences on yam production, marketing, organic farming, the possibility of crops with less damage from elephants, and local agricultural conservation.  ‘This time the festival will be a little different,’ Ghimire said, ‘We will not only celebrate, but also discuss the problems of Bahundangi.’

Tourism Office Kakadbhitta Chief Chhabilal Khatiwada said that the Tarul Utsav will help in promoting internal and external tourism. More than half a dozen sub-committees have been formed to make the festival a success. It is said that the festival will also feature performances by Darjeeling singer Daisy Baraili, Nepali singer/composer Tika Bhandari, and others.
