All 10 local levels in the district have agreed to invest in promoter shares in the 454-megawatt Kimathanka Hydropower Project under construction in Bhotkhola Rural Municipality.

At a discussion organized by the Power Generation Company Limited in Khandbari on Monday, local level people's representatives participating in the program said they are ready to invest the same amount as their respective local levels.

During the discussion, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the project, Hiraman Waiba, informed that the Kimathanka Hydropower Project is one of the largest projects with a capacity of 454 MW. He said that a detailed feasibility study and engineering study have been completed so far. He mentioned that this project will be developed as a 'people's hydropower project'. '51 percent investment in the project will be from the Government of Nepal and 49 percent from the general public,' he said, 'This will ensure local participation and ownership.'

Stating that discussions were held regarding the investment of all 10 local levels of Sankhuwasabha, project project manager Ashok Pandit said that the target is to start electricity production within five years from the date of commencement of construction. He stressed that coordination among all stakeholders is necessary to complete the project on time.

During the discussion, District Coordination Committee Chief Suman Shakya said that since it is such a large and strategically important project, the work should be carried out in a timely manner. He expressed confidence that the project will be successful only with cooperation between the local level, the company and the central government.

The Kimathanka Hydropower Project is a semi-reservoir project. According to the preliminary design, a dam of about 140 meters high will be constructed on the Arun River near Chhumsur village. Due to the dam, a reservoir with a capacity of holding 10.3 million cubic meters of water will be created on the Arun River, covering an area of about 0.350 square kilometers.

The power house of the project will be located at a place called Punchhi, about 500 meters below Lingam village under Bhotkhola Rural Municipality-2. An underground headrace tunnel of about 5,918 meters in length with a diameter of 8.0 meters will be constructed for the project.

In addition, there are plans to construct a 26.8-kilometer access road to reach the project structure site. It is said that since most of the project's structures fall within the buffer zone of Makalu Barun National Park, special attention will be paid to environmental management. The construction of this project is estimated to cost around 92 billion rupees.
