Sirjana Rai, 32, a resident of Ilam Municipality-6, who was injured in a house fire, has passed away.

She was seriously injured in a house fire on Mangsir 18 and died during treatment on Wednesday, according to Ilam police. After a house fire on the night of Mangsir 18, she was rescued by locals and police and taken to Ilam Hospital with burns on about 60 percent of her body.

After treatment was not possible there, the district hospital referred her to Green Cross Hospital in Biratnagar. She died during treatment, said DSP Laxmi Bhandari, Information Officer of the District Police Office, Ilam. Her husband Santosh Rai, who was also injured in the fire, is also being treated at Green Cross Hospital, Biratnagar.

It has been difficult to get Sirjana's body from the hospital due to inability to pay the expenses incurred during treatment. According to Ilam-6 Ward Chairman Durga Shrestha (Madan), a bill worth about 600,000 rupees is yet to be paid by Green Cross Hospital.

Police said the house caught fire when petrol was used to light a fire in the stove. Both the Rai couple are tea garden workers. He has three minor children.
