Rice production has decreased in Koshi Province this year, down by about 20,000 metric tons compared to the previous year.

According to the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture, last year, 1,122,221 metric tons of rice were produced across the province. This year, production has decreased to 1,122,949 metric tons. 'This decrease in production is equivalent to about 19,272 metric tons,' said Purnamaya Gurung, information officer of the directorate.

According to agricultural experts, the decline in production was due to drought during planting and excessive rainfall during harvesting. In addition, pest infestation and the alternative choice of abandoning rice cultivation in some areas have affected productivity.

The directorate stated that along with production, the cultivable area has also decreased slightly. Last year, rice was cultivated on 275,268 hectares. This year, 269,684 hectares have been cultivated.

According to agricultural offices, rice production has decreased in Morang, Jhapa and Sunsari, which are considered the capitals of rice production. Due to this, the total production of Koshi has been affected.

Jhapa produced 354,351 metric tons of rice this year. Last year, 382,812 metric tons were produced. This is a decrease of about 28,000 tons in Jhapa this year.

Morang produced 339,000 tons of rice last year. This year, only 336,920 tons were produced. Sunsari produced only 211,688 tons this year, compared to 217,000 tons last year.

Agricultural experts suggest that the province's rice production will stabilize only if the government effectively implements seed improvement, irrigation expansion and emergency agricultural assistance programs next year.
