Chasok Tangnam (Udhauli) festival being celebrated today

Today is the Udhauli festival. It is being celebrated with great enthusiasm in districts with a majority Kirat community.

This festival is celebrated by the Limbu caste under the Kirat community as Chasok Tangnam, or 'Nwagi Parva'. On this occasion, original and cultural programs are organized in various parts of the east, including Panchthar.

In particular, this festival is celebrated by the Rai, Limbu, Sunuwar and Yakkha castes, who are in the majority in the eastern hills, by calling the day of Mangsir Purnima Chasok Tangnam, or Udhauli Parva.

On this day, Hindus call it Dhanya Purnima and perform Goth Puja. The Kirat community, known as nature worshipers, offer new grains on this day and eat Nwagi. On the occasion of Chasok Tangnam, a crowd has gathered at Sumhalung Temple, Silauti, Lavrekuti and other places in Phidim since Thursday morning, offering new grains and performing Nwagi Puja in a formal manner.

On the occasion of this festival, Nwagi Puja, tea receptions, cultural competitions, tableau performances and forest feasts will be organized in Panchthar, Taplejung, Ilam, Dhankuta and Tehrathum, as well as in the capital Kathmandu, Lalitpur and foreign territories inhabited by indigenous people, says Chandra Kumar Angdembe, central vice-president of Kirat Yakthung Chumlung.
