The Nepal Tourism Board has launched a 'Quality Tourism' campaign in two destinations in Koshi Province, targeting community-based tourism entrepreneurs.
Training on homestay and hygiene has been completed in the major tourism areas of Koshi—Bhedetar and Amaha Simsar. The ‘Homestay Management and Tourism-Friendly Service Capacity Development’ training conducted in Amaha Simsar, Barahakshetra-5, Sunsari provided locals with practical knowledge on skills such as homestay possibilities, registration process, service culture, hospitality, cultural presentation, dealing with foreign tourists, English-Hindi dialogue, and digital promotion, according to the board.
The program was organized by the Sustainable Tourism Project (STP), a joint effort of the Tourism Board and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), in collaboration with the Shwati organization.
Locals said that the cooperation agreement signed between Shwati and Amaha Community Forest Committee on the day of the inauguration has laid the foundation for formally advancing homestay tourism in this area.
At the inauguration of the training, Shwati Sanstha Chairperson Sangita Niraula mentioned that service quality is essential to increase local tourism. After the Community Forest Committee and Ward Office committed to move forward with the community homestay registration process, tourism development in the Amaha wetlands region has been expressed to take a new direction.
Meanwhile, a 5-day 'Customer Service, Hygiene and Tourism-Friendly Behavior' training organized in Sangurigadhi-6, Bhedetar, Dhankuta has inspired local hotel and homestay entrepreneurs towards professional improvement. Rural Municipality Chairperson Jitendra Rai said that improving service standards is essential to attract a large number of guests from India.
Hotel Association Bhedetar Chairperson Tumba Raj Limbu said that despite the rapid expansion of homestays, there is a lack of skills and knowledge, and the training has filled that gap.
Bhedetar Police had opined that a tourist police was needed to increase tourist security. According to Bhavish Shrestha, co-coordinator of Koshi Tourism Year 2082, such programs have become essential to reduce behavioral challenges. After the training, the participants committed to improving everything from the kitchen to the personal hygiene of the employees.
In addition, the rural municipality and the hotel association have agreed to create a formal structure to monitor the learning, which is expected to pave the way for quality tourism services in Bhedetar.
The sustainable tourism project aims to create 2,500 sustainable jobs and enhance the skills of 5,000 people across the country through such training.
According to project manager Dharmaraj Dawadi, the preparation of community homestays in Amaha Simsar and the commitment of the locals towards improving the quality of service in Bhedetar have added new energy to the tourism development of Koshi Province. He said that the local community is becoming the real pioneer of tourism development.
