Chaudandigadi mayor dismisses ward chair for leaving party

What you should know

The mayor of Chaudandigadi has handed over a letter of dismissal to a ward chairperson for leaving the party.

Chaudandigadhi Mayor Kaluman Lama has dismissed Ward 7 Chairman Keshav Adhikari from his post. Mayor Lama handed over a letter of dismissal on November 20 accusing Ward Chairman Adhikari, elected from UML, of leaving the party. Mayor Lama was also elected from UML. The letter states that Adhikari has left the party and since the party committee has approved the decision, it has been decided not to accept him as the ward chairman in accordance with the Political Parties Act, 2073 BS. Ward Chairman Adhikari had announced his departure from UML in a Facebook status saying that the then government had killed a young student during the Genji movement. Mayor Lama claims that action was taken according to the law after the people's representative elected from UML left the party. "After announcing that he had left the party, action was taken according to the law," Mayor Lama said.

Mayor Lama has dismissed Adhikari and assigned ward member Balram Magar as acting representative.

Election Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said that the post of a public representative will be revoked only after the decision of the Election Commission. 'After an elected party leaves the party, the party concerned can recommend to the commission with a decision for the revocation of his post, and the commission will decide on that, but not the municipality itself,' he said.

Ward Chairman Adhikari said that the mayor took away the chair and nameplate he was sitting on when he went to the District Administration Office on a special occasion. He said, 'The mayor has also taken away my chair and nameplate with the help of the municipal police.'

He has filed a complaint with the area police beltar alleging that Mayor Lama gave him a letter of dismissal and took away the chair.

Ward Chairman Adhikari said that Mayor Lama abused his power over him and misused the municipality's letterhead for personal gain.
