Tirtharaj Bhattarai, Mayor of Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality, has expressed happiness over the government's approval of the guidelines for the design of structures constructed from bamboo and demanded that its implementation should also begin from the concerned ministry.

Mayor Bhattarai organized a press conference on Monday and demanded that the implementation of the guidelines should start from the concerned ministry after the government approved them on Sunday.

Mayor Bhattarai said that Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport and Urban Development Kulman Ghising has approved the guidelines and that its implementation should start from the concerned ministry using materials made from bamboo. 'Making a decision is not a big deal, implementing it is the important aspect,' said Mayor Bhattarai, 'Therefore, the implementation should also be done from the concerned ministry using furniture made from bamboo.'

The Guidelines for the Design of Structures Made from Bamboo, 2082, will institutionalize the engineering design and construction of one to two-story residential, small commercial and industrial buildings using bamboo as a structural construction material. A circular will be issued to the local level through the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration to implement the guidelines approved by the Ministry of Urban Development.

Bhattarai said that the guidelines have emphasized on encouraging and promoting the use of bamboo, which has been traditionally used as a construction material, as the use of expensive, environmentally harmful materials such as concrete, steel, cement, iron and others is negatively affecting the earth.

The guidelines have set clear standards on topics such as harvesting, grading, chemical treatment, storage and use of bamboo. Simple and easy design methods and necessary details have been included in the design of houses that can be built using bamboo to make earthquake-resistant, environmentally friendly and cheap structures. The ministry has stated that the guidelines have been prepared based on the facts, knowledge and standards obtained from studies and research on bamboo building design and construction technology at the international level.

After Mayor Bhattarai went on a three-day hunger strike and a five-day hunger strike since last July 20, the then Minister for Forests and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi and Minister for Health and Population Pradeep Poudel broke their hunger strike by signing a 16-point agreement. Earlier, the first National Bamboo Conference was organized in Diktel from 15 to 17 Falgun 2081 with the aim of promoting bamboo products.
