ICIMOD has made public data showing that 42 glacial lakes in Koshi Province are at high risk.
Sharad Prasad Joshi of ICIMOD presented the 2020 report at an interactive program organized in Khandbari on Friday on the terrible risks posed by the rapid changes in Nepal's glaciers and glacial lakes. 'There are 2069 glacial lakes in Nepal, and of these, only 42 are in the Koshi region, which are in a very dangerous state,' he said. He warned that if the glacial lakes burst, it could cause great destruction to life, property and infrastructure.
According to him, four glacial lakes, two in the Bhotkhola area and two in the Makalu area in Sankhuwasabha, are at high risk. Among them, the Thulopokhari glacial lake in the lower Barun is at high risk, he said. 'It is estimated to be about 3 kilometers long and 206 meters deep,' he said, 'There is also a depth of 15 to 25 meters in the vicinity of this lake.'
As the risk increases, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology and UNDP Nepal are working together to implement a risk reduction plan for four glacial lakes, he said. Thulopokhari (Lower Barun) is also included in the plan.
If the glacial lake bursts, many settlements and structures in the Arun Valley are at high risk, he said. 'There are many that come from Tibet. There are 13 such risky lakes in the northern region,' he said.
According to Nira Shrestha Pradhan of ICIMOD, the most vulnerable people in disasters are the disabled, women and children. She said that awareness-raising and capacity-building programs are being conducted targeting them.
At the program, District Coordination Committee Chief Suman Shakya said that sustainable measures are urgently needed to make the risky glacial lakes safe. He stressed the need to install an information system.
A detailed discussion was held on the management of glacial lakes in the program, which was attended by stakeholders including Chief District Officer Sirjana Thapaliya.
