The 141st birth anniversary of Nepal's 16th national figure and the founder of the Kirat religion, Falgunanda Lingden, is being celebrated.

This day is celebrated with great pomp, especially in Panchthar, Ilam, and Taplejung, including Koshi Province. Falgunanda, who was born on Kartik 25, 1942 BS in Chukchinamwa, Ilam, is considered a social reformer by the Kirant Limbu community.

On Baisakh 24, 1988 BS, in Shilouti, Panchthar, the elders of 10 Limbuvans and 17 Thums in eastern Nepal gathered and declared the Satya Dharma Muchulka, starting a campaign for social reform.

The Satya Dharma Muchulka states that girls should be given equal rights to study, teach, read, and share equally, that the practice of gold, silver, and dowry should be abolished, that since girls are symbols of the goddess, they should not be married off to their families, and that instead of dowry, they should be given education or made self-reliant.

Falgunanda, who spent his childhood in a cowshed with his father, has been called a social reformer because he campaigned against smoking, drinking, luxury and superstition until the last moment of his life.

He joined the Indian Army at the age of 22 and after returning from 13 years of service, he started a campaign for social reform. After returning from his service, he started spreading the light of knowledge through cultural campaigns by building Manghim (temple) in various places in Panchthar, Ilam, Taplejung, Bhutan and Tehrathumma.

Having believed in the truth of eating, living and behaving truthfully since childhood, he started the Kirant religion Hang Samyo, saying that the Kirant community was behind in terms of food and culture. Which is now called Falgunanda Panth.

To continue this philosophy and cultural campaign, places including Banjhe (Larumba) in Ilam and Shiloti in Panchthar are being promoted through the Kirat Religious and Cultural and Religious Tourism Center.

He passed away on Chaitra 22, 2005. The Government of Nepal declared him a national celebrity on Mangsir 16, 2066. He is the 16th national celebrity of Nepal. His tomb is in Falgunanda 7, Silauti, Panchthar.
