The district's Mechinagar Municipality has become chaotic after implementing a federal government decision to cut a large number of employees.

The municipality had decided to suspend attendance of 138 municipal employees since October 1, saying it would implement the union's decision. The decision was made at the municipal executive meeting held on October 29. The executive had canceled the contract agreements with temporary, contract and salaried employees who were receiving salaries and allowances from its own sources, saying it would implement the federal government's circular.

The municipal employees whose contract agreements were canceled and who were fired are currently on strike in the municipal premises. They have been staging a sit-in in the municipal premises since the office opened. They are also making their own minutes and attending.

The municipality, on the other hand, has stated that the government of Nepal has decided not to retain posts and employees approved by the provincial and local levels, as well as the circular of the ministry, as well as the decision of the municipal executive on October 29, to extend the term of employees working in temporary, contract and salaried services and cancel the contract agreements.

The decision of the municipal executive, which has a complete majority of CPN-UML, has been strongly opposed by ward chairmen elected from CPN-UML, Nepali Congress, CPN-Maoist Center and others. They say that the employees were fired by misusing the signatures given for attendance at the executive meeting.

Ward chair Prahladmani Oli, elected from CPN-UML, said that the decision to fire the employees was made by misusing the signatures given for attendance at the executive meeting.

Ward chair Krishnaraj Sigdel, elected from UML, of Ward 13, has also strongly opposed the decision. Ward chair Lalit Bahadur Tamang, elected from Nepali Congress, of Ward 6, and Ward chair Giriraj Dhamala, elected from Congress, have also disagreed with the decision of the municipality. They allege that the executive meeting did not take a decision on firing the employees.

Ward chair Babulal Subba, elected from Maoist Center, of Ward 14, also said that the decision should be corrected immediately. Stating that no decision has been made to remove the employee, he said that their signatures for attendance were misused and that the matter would be taken to the authorities.
