In the month of Kartik alone, one and a half dozen drug dealers have been arrested.
Illegal drug trafficking has been on the rise in Koshi Province in recent times. Sunsari Police has launched a 'Dog Snipe' campaign along the Nepal-India border to control the growing drug trade in the border area after local youth started to engage in the use and trafficking of banned drugs like brown sugar.
Meanwhile, the District Police Office, Sunsari, has taken two youths under control with brown sugar in an operation conducted on Saturday night based on a special information. Police have said that they were taken under control after they recovered brown sugar from their possession after stopping a motorcycle with registration number Ko.3 Pa. 6623 coming from Laukahi on the East-West Highway at Baschowk, Inaruwa Municipality-4.
The arrested are Sushil Shrestha, 34, and Ahis Tamrakar, 27, of Barahakshetra Municipality-1. DSP Yograj Khatiwada of the District Police Office, Sunsari, informed that 5.85 grams of brown sugar wrapped in black plastic was recovered from them.
In recent times, the Police Office has been conducting daily operations by prioritizing drug control. As illegal drugs were continuously entering the border area, a 'Dog Snipe' operation with trained dogs was launched in the Sunsari border area after Chhath to control drug trafficking. DSP Khatiwada said that a special police team with 'Dog Snipe' has been mobilized on the Nepal-India border to control drug trafficking.
The police had earlier also increased extensive checks and surveillance in Dharan, Itahari, Laukahi, Duhavi and other areas. DSP Khatiwada said that the police had arrested one and a half dozen drug dealers in the month of Kartik alone.
Locals have expressed concern about the increasing crime and social deviation among the youth due to drugs. Locals have expressed concern that no matter how many operations the police have carried out to arrest the dealers, if the families and society do not raise awareness, this problem will spread further into a disorder.
The police have stated that they have completed the necessary legal process for the arrested accused and are investigating. Police say that this drug control operation will now become a continuous campaign, not just in Sunsari, but in the entire Koshi region.
