Municipal Chairman visits Singha Durbar to discuss Kanchenjunga Conservation Area issues

A team led by Faktanglung Rural Municipality Chairman Rajan Limbu has submitted a memorandum to the Energy Minister, questioning the jurisdiction and legitimacy of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. The memorandum was submitted after reaching Singha Durbar from Taplejung.

Limbu said that his team submitted a letter of attention to Physical Infrastructure and Energy Minister Kulman Ghising on Friday to meet departmental ministers and draw their attention. 'We will meet Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Sunday and inform her about the problems arising due to the conservation area,' he said. Executive member Dandu Sherpa and others are participating in the team along with Limbu.

Municipal Chairman Limbu had earlier reached Singha Durbar and drew attention to this issue even when the government was led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal and KP Sharma Oli. "Since the ownership and entire responsibility of the land within the municipality lies with the municipality, we also do the conservation work," Limbu, who reached Singha Durbar, said in a telephone conversation. "Our main demand is to amend the conflicting laws, regulations and rules as the current government is interim."

Due to the conservation area, roads have not been able to be built in important areas of the municipality, roads have not been upgraded, energy producers have not received permits, even those who have received permits are facing problems as they cannot work, and there is double standard in revenue distribution," said Limbu, the municipality chairman. "The conservation area that should be active in conservation is currently engaged in road construction and upgrading. We, the people's representatives, who were elected to do development infrastructure and other work for the people, have not been able to do anything like opening road tracks, upgrading roads, and facilitating hydro construction," he said. "The party government did not do it, could not do it. We came to Kathmandu with the need to draw attention to the fact that we have a Prime Minister who understands the law and a government that can amend the law."

In 2054 BS, the government declared the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, including Tapethok, Lelep, Olangchungola of Faktadlud Rural Municipality in Taplejud, and Yamfudin of Sirijanga Rural Municipality. The conservation area, spread over 2,350 square kilometers, covers 35 percent of the district's land area. The conservation area extends to the neighboring countries of China and the Indian border.
