Two people have died in Jhapa within three days after falling into electric traps set for fishing. They died after being electrocuted while fishing in two separate incidents.
The first incident took place on October 15 in Mechinagar Municipality-15, Nilkothi. Local Santosh Limbu, 42, suddenly fainted after being electrocuted while fishing in the Timai Canal near his house on Sunday afternoon. He was taken to Mechi Amda Hospital in Dhulabari for treatment, but the doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Another incident of a similar nature occurred in Jhapa on the third day. Police have stated that Lok Bahadur Gayne, 49, of Kachankawal Rural Municipality-2, died after being electrocuted while fishing in the Amalkhutta River on Sunday afternoon. Police have confirmed that in both incidents, accidents occurred while fishing with electricity. Police teams have been deployed in both Mechinagar and Kachankawal and further investigation into the incident is underway, according to the District Police Office, Jhapa. Every year, the number of human casualties due to the use of electricity while fishing in various rivers and canals in the country is increasing. According to experts, such illegal activities have disrupted the ecological balance and are posing a threat to the entire animal kingdom.
