As soon as there is incessant rain, the highway is basically blocked at two places in the Jhapa section of the East-West Highway (Asian Highway). At Bhalukhola in Shivasatakshi and Kalikhola in Mechinagar in the district, the old bridge is being demolished and the new bridge is being repaired, so diversions have been made at two places.

When floods occur after rains, the diversion is washed away and the highway is blocked. This time too, after the incessant rains last Saturday in the mood of Dasain, both the diversions were flooded and the highway was blocked. As a result, passengers had to suffer a lot.

Passenger vehicles were forced to travel for hours through village roads to reach their destination. When the diversion of Kalikhola was flowing, one had to travel south from Kakkadvitta either through Satighatta and exiting at Intabhata, or from Kakkadvitta north to Nakulbanda-Punya Chowk.

Similarly, during the diversion of Balukhola, passenger vehicles were diverted from Mydhar to the east and from Dudhe to the west. In this way, passengers traveling on Dasain were directly affected when the passenger vehicle traveled a long distance. Moreover, this is not the first time that the diversions built in both these rivers have been washed away by floods. As the old bridge was being demolished and a new bridge was being built and a diversion was being built from the side, when there was a flood, the diversion would be washed away.

Everyone has a curiosity at the moment. When will these two bridges be completed and the highway will not be blocked? Ashar Mahat, Engineer of Kakdavitta-Laukhi Road Plan (Asian Highway) said that as the construction work of both the bridges has reached the final stage, Kalikhola bridge will be operational within 2-3 months and Bhalukhola bridge within 1-2 months. According to him, the bridge in Balukhola has already been built.

Here only the soil is left to be filled and the side road to be built, while the slab of the bridge in Kalikhola has been built next to the bridge. It remains to be taken to the pillar. He claims that the work will be completed within two months. There is no problem of blocking the highway before Tihar. After Tihar, a team of expert masons will also arrive, so we can work quickly," he said.

20 bridges including 18 small and three large bridges have been contracted in the eastern section of the Kakdavitta-Laukhi road scheme. Ninda, Biring and Kankai bridges have been placed in the larger bridges which have been awarded separate contracts. He said that the construction work of all the small and big bridges will be completed within the current financial year.
