Landslides have caused heavy damage at the Khandbari-Kimathanka road construction site under the North-South (Koshi) road section.
About 200 meters of the road has completely washed away due to the heavy landslide that happened on August 15th in Makalu rural municipality-3 Alfte area. Traffic has been completely blocked in this section since one month.
After the road was damaged, the traffic was blocked and the locals in the nearby settlements also faced a big problem. Due to the landslide, not only the road but also nearby private land, fields, crops and plants have been damaged.
This year's active monsoon is causing great damage to various places in Sankhuwasabha. Due to rapid flow of river Arun, continuous rains and water seeping from mountain springs, the landslide area has not stabilized yet. According to Ram Bahadur Gurung, the head of the road planning office, it has become impossible to put the road into operation immediately as the soil is swampy in the landslide area and there is a danger of even heavy machinery falling.
'The flow of the river has not decreased,' he said, 'After the road was blocked, there is continuous coordination between the district administration, Bhatkhaela and Makalu Rural Municipality, people's representatives and stakeholders is.' According to him, the road repair work will be started as soon as the river flows down due to favorable weather.
'Until the road is operational, travelers have to use alternative routes as they have to face inconvenience,' said Wangcheder Bhate, Chairman of Bhaetkhaela Rural Municipality, 'The locals have to face difficulties after the transportation of food and daily necessities has been stopped.'
The Planning Office issued a statement on Tuesday and apologized publicly for the inconvenience caused by the road block. "The road will be put into operation as soon as the weather becomes favorable," Gurung said through a statement.
The North-South (Koshi) road is an important strategic route connecting eastern Nepal with China. "The main challenge now is to solve the compensation dispute along with the natural disaster and bring the road into operation," he said.
