In Taplejung, only 84.6 percent of planting has been done due to insufficient rain. Last year, 98.5 percent was planted.
The farmers who had prepared the rice seeds were preparing to plant the crop even when the time was very late. But since there was no water till the second week of August, they cut bad seeds and gave them to the cattle.
According to Agricultural Extension Officer Vijay Shrestha of Agricultural Knowledge Center Taplejung, paddy is cultivated in 5,666 hectares in the district. This year only 4 thousand 797 hectares were planted. 6 percent of the fields that are not planted with rice are completely barren. Agricultural Knowledge Center has informed that 10 percent of the crops will be millet, maize mas, masyam etc.
Farmers who have not started farming are expecting that they would have received support from the government even for seeds. The spokesperson of Fungling municipality, Mohan Neupane, said that the collection of data on barren land within the municipality is underway and after the collection, a conclusion will be drawn as to how to provide support. "Now we are collecting data from each ward," Neupane said, "Then we will discuss where and what kind of support is needed."
Yuvraj Baral of Fungling Municipality-3 said that the paddy that was supposed to be planted in July was left barren after it did not rain until August.
