After the strong objection and protest of the Federation of Journalists, the Koshi State Assembly has removed the Mass Communication Bill from the agenda to be passed.
This bill, which was passed by the Justice and Legislation Committee of the state on the 4th, was submitted to the state assembly on the 6th. However, it has been confirmed that it will not go forward after the question that some clauses in the bill violate press freedom and are anti-journalism were raised publicly.
The Working Arrangement Consultative Committee of the State Assembly has decided not to put this bill on the agenda of Friday's meeting. Some provisions of the
bill limit the freedom of journalism, impose unnecessary restrictions on the publication/broadcast of news and increase government interference, and local and national level journalist organizations have been protesting.
Earlier, Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki had indicated that the bill could not go ahead in the session.
