Journalists demonstrated in Biratnagar on Friday against the communication bill submitted by the Koshi state government in the state assembly.
Parliamentary journalists staged a peaceful sit-in inside the Provincial Assembly premises, while a team of representatives of the Koshi Provincial Committee of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists and various media organizations demonstrated outside the premises. During the
demonstration, there was also a scuffle between the police and journalists. Journalists have warned that some of the provisions of the bill will attack the freedom of the press and that they will protest against it.
The Bill was passed by the Justice Administration and Legislation Committee and submitted to the State Assembly on Friday. In the proposed bill, there is a provision to fine journalists and media up to one lakh rupees based on news content, which journalists are strongly opposing.
Federation of Nepalese Journalists Koshi Province Committee, Morang District Committee and Parliamentary Journalists Society issued a press statement and demanded the provincial government to immediately withdraw the bill. Associations of journalists have warned that any step to suppress freedom of the press will not be accepted.
