A prisoner serving sentence in a rape case has absconded from Sunsari's Jhumka Jail. 28-year-old Rupak Poudel, a resident of Diprung Chuichumma Rural Municipality-2 in Khotang, has absconded from the 'B' Block of Khatri Jail since last night.

Khatri, who was absconding, was ordered to be jailed on 21 July 2081 by the court for his involvement in the gang rape incident. When the case was closed, Sunsari district court sentenced him to 13 years imprisonment on 25th Chait 2081. After the
incident, a team led by Chief District Officer Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, including security chiefs of Sunsari, conducted an on-site inspection and assessed the security situation of the jail.
Chief District Officer Dharmendra Kumar Mishra said that a 5-member investigation committee has been formed under the coordination of Assistant Chief District Officer of Sunsari Lokman Shrestha to investigate the incident.
