Since 2005, Hong Kong has banned Nepali citizens from working and domestic worker visas, which is why many Nepali women are sent to Hong Kong as Indian citizens.
What you should know
More than half a dozen non-governmental organizations working against human trafficking and celibate trafficking are active on the eastern border of Kakadvitta. Despite the presence of that organization at the Nepal-India border crossing, on Friday seven young women between the ages of 16 and 21 crossed the Mechi river and crossed the Mechi River, hiding the eyes of the employees of that organization and the police. They also had two men.
The deployed Indian paramilitary force (SSB) questioned the team suspiciously during 'ID verification' at the border. SSB handed over nine persons, including two men, to Khoribari police for further investigation after it was revealed that they were traveling for foreign employment during the initial interrogation.
Khoribari police's further investigation revealed that all seven girls were about to be sent to Hong Kong. More seriously, Indian passports were also found with them. "We went to the police office to rescue the girls and hand them over to their parents," said Govind Ghimire, the head of Maiti Nepal Kakdvitta, "the police was preparing papers to send back." However, after finding Nepali documents along with Indian passport and Aadhaar card with them, they refused to leave.'
The police are investigating and detaining them on the charge of using documents from both countries. 41-year-old Dipesh Gurung from Toribari in Darjeeling and 61-year-old Japan Gurung from Makalu rural municipality-3 of Sankhuwasabha have also been arrested for being involved in a gang that sends women to Hong Kong. The Indian police said that all seven women belonged to Sankhuwasabha.
'If their Indian passports were not found with them, the Indian police would have handed them over to us and they would have returned to Nepal,' Ghimire clarified, "But after finding documents from both countries, the police told them that they could not be released."
A similar incident happened last year too . Two women from Dharan were arrested after showing their Nepalese citizenship and Indian passport while crossing the Mechi bridge to enter India.
This time too, the incident has been repeated. In the background of this, the secret that the gang involved in human trafficking is planning to send Nepalese citizens to Hong Kong as Indians has been revealed.
Since 2005, Hong Kong has banned Nepali citizens from working and domestic worker visas. This is the reason why many Nepalese women are sent to Hong Kong as Indian citizens. Hong Kong is an easy labor destination for Indian workers, but it is still closed for Nepalis.
Some time ago, Labor and Employment Minister Sharatsingh Bhandari said that Beijing will take the initiative to develop Hong Kong as an attractive labor destination. Currently, it is estimated that there are about 30,000 Nepali workers in Hong Kong. Even though the demand for domestic workers is high, Nepali women are forced to fly to Hong Kong by obtaining Indian identity cards and passports through brokers and not getting legal visas.
Hong Kong easily grants visas for Indian domestic and skilled workers . Due to the old commercial, political and manpower relations with India, the visa process there is considered relatively simple.
On that basis, especially Nepali women are made Indians and sent to Hong Kong. Gangs making fake Aadhaar cards and passports are active in Siliguri, Bagdogra and other areas of India. Gangs are found to be making Indian documents with huge amount of money.
The police investigation has revealed that gangs involved in human trafficking charge 3 to 5 lakh rupees per person for flying to Hong Kong with Indian passports. One of the arrested accused has also given the same statement .
Since there are direct flights to Hong Kong from India's Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai airports, it seems that gangs use these five airports to send Nepalis to Hong Kong.
In a similar incident, on the night of 27th June (11 June) at Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore, South India. A 26-year-old Nepalese woman was caught by the police while trying to go to Hong Kong using an Indian passport from Terminal 2.
Sushmita Rai from Nepal had been living in Haryana for some time. She had booked a ticket for Cathay Pacific flight CX 624 and also had a Hong Kong employment visa.
According to the report registered with the police by the Indian immigration officer Zubin Johnson Vaidya, she arrived at Terminal 2 at 9:20 p.m., where the flight was scheduled to take place at 1:20 p.m. He was carrying a flight ticket, Hong Kong employment visa and Indian passport number 859442.
However, when the immigration officer asked for additional documents for proof of identity, she showed her Indian Aadhaar card . After that, she also showed the national identity card of Nepal on her mobile phone. She was immediately arrested on the charge of carrying documents of two countries.
Nepali citizens are not allowed to hold identity cards or passports of two countries, so a case has been registered against him under Sections 336 (making fake documents), 340 (using fake documents) and Passport Act of the Indian Penal Code. According to the Passport Act 1967, if a fake document is found to be used, imprisonment for up to 7 years and imprisonment for 2 years and a fine of 50,000 or both can be imposed.
According to the police, she made Aadhaar card and voter ID from West Bengal. Based on these fake documents, she also made an Indian passport.
