Eighty-eight-year-old Lakshmidevi Shrestha's eyes were watering. On Wednesday morning, she unknowingly shed tears while placing a wreath on the black and white photo of martyr Bhimnarayan Shrestha on the wall. While celebrating the birth anniversary of martyr Bhimnarayan, his wife Lakshmi Devi's eyes were filled with tears.
Shrestha's half-height salik is also near the house. From the courtyard, she looked at the Salik in Bhimnarayan Chowk, Dhankuta Municipality-6 and remembered her with folded hands. If Bhimnarayan was still alive, he would have been 88 years old, the same age as Lakshmi.
Bhimnarayan, who was born on 24 June 1994, was sentenced to death at the age of 41. At midnight on 24 January 2035, he was released from the Central Jail, surrounded by security personnel, shaking hands with the current Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli as well as the left-wing leaders Mohanchandra Adhikari, Radhakrishna Mainali and others. Two days later, he was shot dead in the forest of Kosi Tappu.
On 3rd Chait 2030, Shrestha was arrested in an injured state on the charge of throwing a bomb at a program attended by the then Raja Birendra in Biratnagar. After harsh prison torture, the death sentence was given on 26 Jan 2035.
Shrestha and Captain Yagya Bahadur Thapa are believed to be among those who were given death sentence by the state side after the four martyrs who were given death sentence against the Rana regime. Shrestha, who said goodbye to his colleagues who were in the revolution against the Panchayat system at that time, said goodbye to his colleagues who were agitating against the then panchayat system, "'Life is a meeting, we struggle together, otherwise our meeting is just that, those who survive will make a revolution.'"
On the occasion of Shrestha's 88th birth anniversary, a tribute meeting was also held on Wednesday. Martyr wife Lakshmi and eldest son Manojnarayan Shrestha have also been honoured.
A tribute meeting was organized at Bhimnarayan Chowk under the organization of Shaheed Bhimnarayan Memorial Foundation, Dhankuta. Constituent Assembly member Leela Subba, Congress provincial member Navinkishore Shakya, Congress Dhankuta district secretary Vijaysantoshi Rai, leader Sumana Timsina and other family members gave their views on the program.
According to Martyr Shrestha's son Manojnarayan, the body was kept on the banks of the river Saptakosi near the place where the death sentence was given. Shrestha's brother Birendra Narayan was asked to identify the body. "They forced a tax to give candles," said brother Birendra, "There was a long argument that people with parents are not allowed to give candles." Later, a Brahmin of the army gave a candle. Shrestha was declared a national martyr by the government on February 19, 2072. Ramakrishna Shrestha, who was seriously injured in the bomb blast incident, died at the same time.
