Flood damages Hewa river diversion, blocks Mechi highway

The Panchthar-Taplejung section of the Mechi highway has been blocked after the flood which came along with the incessant rain since Tuesday afternoon caused damage to the diversion built on the Hewa River in Panchthar on the Mechi highway.

When the water level crossed the diversion, stones and sand were washed away and the highway was blocked.

There was drought in the lower coastal areas including Panchthar headquarters Fidim for about a week. Meanwhile, on Tuesday afternoon, the river flooded due to incessant rain in the upper reaches of Phalelung and Phidim.

Due to the damage to the diversion, traffic has been stopped in the Panchthar Taplejung section of the Mechi highway since 6:30 in the evening.

District Police Office Panchthar Police Inspector Rupesh Tamang said that with the damage to the Hewa river diversion, passengers and drivers have been notified to get information about the road conditions before traveling in this area.

From today evening, the vehicles traveling from Ilam and Panchthar to Taplejung and from Taplejung to Panchthar to Ilam and Jhapa have been stuck on the road.
