The number of women going for foreign employment is increasing

Recently, the number of women going for foreign employment is increasing. Out of 820 people who went for foreign employment from Khotang in one month, 84 are women.

According to Khotang coordinator of the Sami program, Santosh Rai, only 84 women and 736 men went for foreign employment in the month of May. 

It has been informed that 2,146 men and 933 women of the district have obtained passports in the annual progress review and inter-trial program of the Safe Immigration Sami program held at the Yellow House in Diktel Bazar on Wednesday. According to the coordinator Rai, 8,312 people including 7,460 men and 852 women have received labor approval from the foreign employment department in one year.

When going to foreign employment, economic contribution, increase in income level and improvement of standard of living, transfer of skills and technology, tendency of semi-skilled and unskilled workers to leave despite earning foreign currency, mental stress and family problems, lack of proper utilization of remittances, increase in worker death rate, fraud and lack of legal protection, Rai said.

From last July to June 2016, 61 complaints related to foreign employment were received, and 26 complaints were dismissed. Rai informed that 35 others are in the process. Rai told that there are complaints about being cheated while going for foreign employment, being stranded abroad, and those who died during foreign employment not getting compensation. 

Sami program is being conducted in 5 local levels of Khotang to make foreign employment safe, orderly and dignified. Sami program is being conducted in Diktel Rupakot Mazhuwagadhi Municipality, Halesi Tuwachung Municipality, Kepilasgadhi Rural Municipality, Khotehang Rural Municipality and Rawabesi Rural Municipality.

Rai said preparations are being made to operate in Jantedhunga and Barahpokhari rural municipalities. According to him, by the end of last May, 3,636 people, 2,522 men and 1,114 women, have taken service at the Immigrant Resource Center Diktel. 

The reunification Remi project has been conducted at ten local levels in Koshi province, said Remi project coordinator Ozonbabu Acharya. The mandate of the project is to work on reintegration efforts for people who have returned from foreign employment.
