Victims say - 'Wild elephant poaching is the problem, not tourism'
Elephant victims of Bahundangi protested in Mechinagar municipality with slogans. The victims, who reached the municipal premises under the leadership of the youth group of elephant victims, raised slogans such as 'Elephants cannot be grazed, we do not need relief', 'Elephants cannot be grazed, tears cannot be sold' and submitted a demand letter to the city.
They said that even though hundreds of elephants are coming everyday and causing distress to the locals, the concerned parties and people's representatives are ignoring them. "We have been suffering for years. However, the government is promoting that Bahundang has become elephant-friendly and people and elephants enjoy together. Who will listen to our pain? The victims who came to the city were unanimous. The protest rally which started from Mechinagar-1 Gadagalli, where the wild elephants are terrorizing, reached the city via Bahundangi Bazaar-Bhrikuti-Intabhatta. Meghraj Khadka, a resident of Bahundangi, who arrived in the city, said that the terror of wild elephants, which was under control until a few years ago due to solar fencing, has become the same recently after the solar fencing was damaged. Solar fencing broke today. The battery is disappearing. Instead of showing interest in its management and protection, the government is discussing the elephant corridor," he said. "We cannot sleep at night. Bahundangi knows how persecuted we are. The people of Bahundangi won't be able to sleep comfortably all their lives?'
Another local Gopi Rizal told that thousands of bighas of fertile land of Bahundangi are becoming barren. A person who goes to cut grass will return safely, it is not known whether he will return. We are in so much trouble," he says, "Human-elephant coexistence is one way. However, here is a situation where humans cannot survive.'
Ravin Shrestha, another resident, said that after the elephant damaged the paddy field, even though they planted betel nuts, this time the elephant broke everything. He said, "Most of Bahundangi are farmers. There is a situation where you have to cry all night because the elephant will cause damage. How can we work during the day?' According to him, Bahundangi has demanded the government to stop the elephants that cause terror every day. Submitting the demand letter to the city, they have put 15 points of demand. In which solar fencing should be repaired to prevent elephants coming from India, the local government and the human-elephant conflict management committee seem to be out of sync, so they should work for the benefit of the local people, and the local government should plant at least 5% of the trees that are eaten by elephants in the forest within its territory.
Similarly, hundreds of elephants coming daily are a problem for Bahundangi. There are also demands that it should be stopped doing business in the name of tourism, and organizations that make money to eat in the name of elephants should be completely closed.
Nagar deputy chief Mina Pokharel Upreti said that she will address the demands while understanding the memorandum.
