The government had announced a special program for the prevention of leprosy in 2010 15 years ago. However, since then, the number of new leprosy patients has not stopped increasing every year.
Although it was announced 15 years ago that there would be less than one infected person per 10,000 population, the risk has not ended. According to government data, 17 districts across the country are at high risk.
In Koshi province alone, 411 people are infected with leprosy, according to Health Directorate Dhankuta. Tulsi Prasad Guragai, Leprosy Focal Person of the Directorate, said that there were 411 newly infected people in 2080/081 in 9 out of 14 districts of this province.
Morang is the most infected with 132 leprosy. There are 128 people in Sunsari and 125 people in Jhapa. There are 12 in Udaipur, 8 in Dhankuta, 1 in Panchthar, 4 in Ilam and 1 in Tehrathum. Among them, the number of children under 14 years is 12. No new patients have been found in Sankhuwasabha, Solu, Okhaldhunga, Bhojpur and Tehrathum.
Due to this disease, the skin, nerves and various parts of the body are affected due to bacteria named Mycobacterium leprae, said Guragai. It has been said that there is a risk of disability in people who have the disease due to visible scars on the skin and damage to the nerves.
Three people are infected in Mahalakshmi municipality of Dhankuta and five people are infected in Chhathar Jorpati rural municipality. Prem Bahadur Shah, Head of Health Branch of Mahalakshmi Municipality, said that regular medicine and awareness activities are being continued to prevent infection from the patients found in that municipality.
