Just as Makwanpura was called Makwanpure or Jhapaka was called Jhapali, the inhabitants of Marwar at that time were called Marwaris. Even if they reach any corner of the Marwari world, they are only known as a distinct community as 'Marwari' due to their distinct dress, lifestyle, language and culture.
Writer Ganesh Prasad Lath's nostalgia for the town of Birgunj is 'Simant Jakkan' . There is no harmony between the Birgunj seen by Lath in the book and the one seen by Tanneri today. Deepak Sapkota's conversation with him about the city and memoirs:
You have written something in the book about 'Laath', but please tell our readers - what kind of Lahat are you, how Laath?
In British India, Lath-Saheb or Marshal-Lath used to be a kind of official and honorary position. Even in Nepal during the Rana period, there was a rank of Jangi-Lath. What I heard from the elders - my ancestors once got the title of lath. And, later descendants continued that position as a surname. No one knows what the secret truth is except God. He has discussed about 'Marwar' in the book
. What is the nexus of 'Marwad' and 'Marwadi'?
Marwar literally means desert. The desert means the land of death. In medieval India, there was a separate kingdom in the western part of the present-day Rajasthan province in central western India. There are mountains of sand all around, the climate is very hot, there is constant rain for twelve months. The ancestors of the Shah dynasty kings of Nepal are also from Marwar. And the Nexon between Marwar and Marwari There is nothing strange about the
(or let's say the connection). Otherwise, there are not only traders in the Marwari community, but also people of different castes and castes.
The transformation of the Birganj city seen in Balkhai is a
. What is that transformed city-picture? Trying to explain the stories from the part of your own poetry, the vibmer of the Valley is never a whip and lost Chahat Balko, Favori Tire Khali Khari Khandra has a dollar dollars, and the river is cocked talked / a goodzabbed Of Concreting is done.
There is no harmony between the Veergunj seen by the child Ganesha, the Veergunj seen by the elders and the Veergunj seen by the youths of today. With Pusantaran, the status of this city has risen from bullock carts to EV vehicles. At the same time, people's lifestyle, values and thinking have also changed. Birganj has gained many things and has also lost many things. Ironically, in today's Veerganj, not philosophy, but performance is important. The cover is more demanding than the ideal. The affinity graph goes up and down depending on the occasion. In
'Seemant Jakkan', you have talked to many people of Birganj and recorded your shared experiences. What do you think, if only the personal experiences of the writer come to mind in memoir writing?
! Memoirs are often written about the author's personal experiences. However, I did not intend to make 'Simanta Jakkan' just a writer's memoir. Until one forgets the things before one's birth, things beyond the scope of one's experience and the role of a marginal city in the development of the nation, etc. Yes, how narrow or wide the scope of the memoir? This can become a matter of debate.
What inspired you to tell the story of the road to modernity in the soil of Birganj?
On the one hand, even though Birgunj is known as an economic city, its historical or cultural stories are also mysterious. However, those things were going to disappear from memory with the transfer of books. I thought it should be written down. Next, there is the story of technological development. One hundred to two hundred years before today, what kind of technical facilities were there in all of Nepal including Birgunj? Or let's say, what kind of deprivation did our ancestors have to go through? I also felt that such topics should be mentioned to the new generation.
Birgunj is known as the city of immigrants. What is your understanding of the demographic and cultural makeup of Birganj?
Yes, once Birshamsher had invited Marwari and Kalwar merchants to do business in Birganj. Brahmins and Newars were recruited from other parts of Nepal for government work. Some of the related Shahs and Ranas were installed with the aim of keeping some away from the politics of the capital, while others got help in the Rajkaz. When the
medical service started, whether it was the rail transport service, doctors and specialists from the Bengali community were drawn. Many schools were established in Birganj during the reign of Juddhashamsher. Teachers were also brought from India for those schools. The leading role of the Sikh Sardars in the development of road transport goes without saying. Likewise, people from different communities joined in different areas. However, despite the gathering of different communities, the atmosphere of Birganj was very intimate.
People from all communities participated in the festival. All communities were on the verge of divine calamity. Dramas such as Ramlila, Mahabharata, Allahoodal etc. were staged in the streets. Lache dance was also famous. Holi, Diwali, Dasain, Sappai festivals were celebrated together. When the birthday of a king or queen occurs, the entire Birgunj is decorated. Football, cricket, hockey and wrestling games used to be played in the stadium of Birganj. Players and teams used to come from India as well. The organization of Kauwali and Musayra was also a mess. There were also many fairs and exhibitions. Literary institutions and libraries were also abundant in Birganj. There were many literary programs.
Currently the number of Bengali and Sikh Sardars is small. Most of Raithane Birganjeli's new offspring are outside Birganj. By expanding the area, Birgunj has become a metropolitan city. There are three customs checkpoints in Nepal that collect the highest income in Birganj alone, from this one can assess the economic activities here. Where there is honey, there will be not only bees, but also dragons. Will it be known as a bastion of riots in the future? is starting to get scared.
What kind of city is Birganj? What is its body and soul made of? How is the intoxication there?
Turning the pages far back, it is also seen that this city was once a part of Tiruhat or Baji Republic as a fragmented settlement. The Senvanshis also ruled the region. However, it is clear that before the reign of Birshamsher, the status of Birganj was no more than a neglected settlement.
Just 700 km from Calcutta port and located in the middle of Nepal in terms of internal transportation, it has become the main port in terms of import and export as the environment is also suitable for business all twelve months. It became a city without transportation for internal transportation. Industry factories were also established here very soon.
has many architect's role to make it flesh. All the schools, colleges, Dharamshalas, Temples, Pati, Paua Sappai here were built by the people of Birgunj at their own expense. The biggest industrialists of Nepal are products of this city. Birganj is a city inhabited by Garikhanes for hundreds of years. If we talk about the soul, its soul is formed from the mantra Sarve Bhavantu Sukhin. Karma Yoga is among its intoxications.
Your childhood nostalgia comes to book with many gadgets invented by science. How long does nostalgia last?
Nostalgia lives as long as the person concerned. In most people past forty, the chemistry of nostalgia begins to rise rapidly. And, his nostalgia goes with him. However, if nostalgia is scripted, it can help new generations understand history.
Continued reading 'Seemant Jakkan' - Your writing seems to be heavily influenced by films. Film writing limit or strength?
film is a mixed form of audio and video of a written story! As many people understood the story of Ram and Sita by reading Valmiki's 'Ramayana', they understood the story of Ram and Sita a hundred times more by watching the movie. Let's talk about the Nalapani battle. Until the film was made, today's generation did not know much about the battle of Nalapani. Therefore, when writing in a filmic style, the writer is trying to move from a narrow circle to a wider one. In other words, I think that being able to write in film style is strength.
What is the story of your struggle to become known among the readers as a 'Nepali writer, Nepali writer' in the Nepali language?
is a long story. At first, no one believed that he could write with a stick. It is not even alleged that others were made to write. It was sad, but I kept patience, I wrote, I mentioned my shortcomings, I reduced them. It is not error free yet. Linguistic purity and impurity should be strengthened even today. The journey continues and will continue. However, gratitude must be expressed for those who have been harshly criticized or rejected in the past. If it wasn't for them, I would have been blown away. You were writing a
novel, how did you come to non-fiction through 'Simant Jakkan'? What is the difference between writing a novel and nonfiction? For
, even when writing a novel, the events are mostly real, only the characters or places are changed. However, the subject written in the novel is not acceptable. The subject of the novel cannot even be included in a historical or academic document. In other words, no matter how hard he tried, the novel could not come out of the scope of entertainment. That's why we wanted to look at non-narratives as well. To write a novel, you have to go to many places, you have to find many things.
However, when a character is raised as a villain during writing or when someone objects to an event, there is not much anger - the event is able to be twisted, turned, flipped and reversed. There was no such exemption in non-narratives. So I reached the door of the concerned person as soon as possible. By reading the books of foreign authors such as Silva Levy, Tony Hagen, I gathered all the evidence so that no one could point a finger. It took three times as much effort as the novel. However, it was a different experience - I learned new things and had fun.
A person writes one or two books with desire, but you have already written 6 books, why? How much do you write? You are also a businessman, how do you find time to write?
Everyone expresses such curiosity. It is all about time management, a businessman can find time to watch movies, travel abroad, organize a party or play chess, but can also find time to write a book. Keeping that in mind, I took time away from my other hobbies and devoted myself to writing.
I once read somewhere - after coming to the world of characters, either write your name on the front page of the book as a writer or become an inspiration character on the inner page of the book, even if you die after doing this, your name will not die. I will write something as long as I live.
