Donald Trump's Sharpie sign

Other presidents use pens, but why does Trump want a permanent marker? Is his signature with Sarpy the same? Why was Trump attracted to markers after he used a normal pen when he was the first president?

After taking office as the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump issued an executive order to pardon the sentences of 1,200 accused/prisoners in the 2021 Capitol riots since withdrawing from the Paris Agreement and the World Health Organization.

Signed more than 200 executive orders, including the South Border National Emergency Declaration, the formation of the Department of Government Efficiency under the leadership of Elon Musk. According to the National Archives and National Administration, 26 executive orders signed by him were issued that day. As this article was being prepared, 89 executive orders made by Trump have been released by the National Archives and National Administration.

After the order is signed, the White House sends it to the office of the Federal Register and from there publishes it in the Gazette, forcing the government office or organization to implement it, getting legal recognition. An executive order can also be ruled invalid or unconstitutional by a court or overturned by another executive order.

When Trump issues an executive order or a decision  When he does, he happily shows the order he signed. More attention is drawn to his signature long, thick, snow-capped jaws than to his command. That crisp, bold signature is not a pen, but a marker. Trump doesn't use a pen, he uses a permanent marker called a 'sharpie'. He distributed markers used to sign various orders to the supporters.

...

Trump wants to keep every topic in discussion. The use of 'sarpi' is also applicable to this. Why not? He seems to be trying to identify it as a symbol of his presidency. Whether it's a pen or his image, Trump always wants to leave a permanent mark, like a 'sharpie'. The thick, long and bright signature he makes can be seen by everyone from afar. The signature made with 'sharpie' is not erased instantly, it looks long lasting, which is not possible with the ink used in ordinary pen.

Before entering the White House, he used a marker to sign autographs, write notes, or highlight articles/compositions. Marker-signature on his famous topics during the presidency.

The 'Sharpy' brand is a permanent marker manufactured by a public company called Nivelles Brands. Sharpy was first marketed as a permanent marker in 1964 by Sanford Inc. It was purchased by Nivelles in 1990. Whether signing a

executive order or jotting down an important speech, the long, shiny bold letters he writes capture the media's attention.

Trump's fondness for 'Sharpie' is an incident - the signature on the wall. On September 18, 2019, he signed the bollards wall built on the border with Mexico in the state of California with a sharpie.

also discusses a tweet written by Trump on a matter that has become public. During the impeachment inquiry, a note in which he had written that he would not make any kind of agreement with anyone was made public, where he used a 'sharpie' to note it down. It was written - "I do not need anything and I will not enter into any transaction with Zelensky."

In 2022, in a document found during the investigation against him, it was found that Sarpy was also used in his old writings. He used Sharpie in a signature of 2005. By the way, during the 2016 election campaign, a piece of paper in Trump's hand regarding the percentage of votes was caught on camera. Chirktoma was written with a marker.

The most talked about 'Sharpy' marker happened in September 2019. He showed a map of the state of Alabama to reporters who were called to report on Hurricane Dorian. There was criticism after a black thick line drawn with a 'Sharpy' marker was seen on the map. A government office there also stated that Alabama would not be affected by Hurricane Dorian, but Trump claimed that he would reach there with a 'Sharpy'. The incident was called 'Sharpy Gate'. At that time, many memes were created against Trump.

...

On January 20, 2025, the first day of the inauguration of the 47th president, Trump distributed his favorite markers to his supporters. Those were the markers used to sign orders placed in the Capital One Arena. He seemed very happy doing so. Whatever Trump does, he does it differently and differently.

Other presidents use pens, but why does Trump use markers? Is his signature with Sarpy the same? Why was Trump, who used a normal pen when he was first president, attracted to markers?  In a series broadcast by

HBO in 2018, he explained the reason for choosing 'Sharpi'. He said that signing with an expensive pen was not legible. He said that the 'Sharpy' marker also writes well and looks bright. For this, he asked the representative of the company to design a pen with black color and gold coating, he said in the series. He said that when it is black, it looks 'rich'. Pens bought at high prices do not write well. I took Sarpi, it writes well. It's simple and affordable and bold like me,” he said in an interview. He also uses 'Sharpi' in his regular diary.

Which president used which pen?

Trump used specially made cross pens to sign executive orders on the first day of his first presidential term. It was – Century-11 Black Lacquer and Gold Roller Ball Pen. The pen is manufactured by AT Cross Company. On the first day of his first term in 2017, Trump signed only one executive order. In his first term, he signed a total of 220 executive orders. While Biden has signed 160, Barack Obama has signed 147 executive orders in 2009 and 129 in 2014.

Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton used Cross Townsend pens. Obama used Century-11 black lacquer and gold roller pen. Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George Bush used the cross pen, but the official use of the cross pen can be read in the archives of the US presidential office from Clinton's term.  According to

CNN, Trump, Obama and Bush also used pens with refills. Bush used a blue pen, Trump and Obama used a black pen. The Sharpie used by Trump is marked with his signature by the company as a 'special pen'.

On the first day of his first term, Trump joked, "We need more pens."  The AT Cross Company, based in Rhode Island, has been supplying pens to the White House for years. Penn Biden used the Cross Century roller ball made by the company. A pen with golden decoration on a black coating was his very first day. The pen also had the President's signature and presidential seal.

The pens given to US presidents are specially designed. The company sends a variety of designs to the president-elect in advance of the design. Based on that, after the president-elect likes the design, the company makes that design. All processes are completed before this transfer of power. Even before the day of signing the executive order, the company will provide the pen.

The pens of this company were also used by US Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. However, the first pen of the cross company was officially written by "The New York" magazine, which started during the era of the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. The model he used was the Classic Century Black Ball Point. Reagan and George W. Bush chose some of the company's lighter and thinner pens.

Bill Clinton didn't use Cross Company pens. He used a pen with a gold-plated metal clip with Parker ball points. "New York" reported that the pen used by Clinton is no longer available in the market.

Barack Obama used two types of pens during his tenure. One of the pens he used was black and the other was black/white in color.

Donald Trump became the president after Obama in America. After assuming office, he had the same old Century 11 model on his desk. However, later he said that the pen did not write well according to the price and chose 'Sharpy'.

There are also various anecdotes of US presidents using pens. Some sign executive orders or policies with a single pen, while others have signed policies using more than 20 pens. Obama used 22 pens to sign a law. Obama used 22 different pens to sign the Affordable Care Act. Obama used 22 different pens to issue an order so that it would be useful for those who played an important role in passing the law. Obama gave Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi the pens used to sign the 2010 US health law. Some consider this law as 'Obma Care'.

US President Landon B. Johnson used 75 pens when he signed a civil rights law in 1964. It is mentioned in the archives of the US President's Office that he gave the pen to the leader and social activist Martin Luther King Jr. who played a role in passing the law.
