The main cause of road accidents in Karnali Province is speeding. According to statistics from the Nepal Police Highway Safety and Traffic Management Office, Surkhet, most accidents in Karnali are due to excessive speed.
SP Mukunda Prasad Rijal, chief of the Nepal Police Highway Safety and Traffic Management Office, Surkhet, stated that out of 1,086 road accidents in the fiscal year 2081/082, 644 incidents were caused by speeding.
Similarly, in fiscal year 082/083, out of 1,197 accidents, 771 were due to speeding. Rijal said that in fiscal year 2081/082, 644 incidents were caused by excessive speed.
Likewise, in Karnali, most drivers involved in road accidents are between 26 and 40 years old. Forty-four percent of accidents occur within this age group.
Motorcycles are the vehicles most frequently involved in accidents. In fiscal year 082/083, 47 percent of motorcycles were involved in accidents. Recently, the number of fatalities in road accidents in the province has slightly decreased.
According to statistics from the Nepal Police Highway Safety and Traffic Management Office, Surkhet, although the number of road accidents in Karnali has increased, the number of fatalities has decreased.
Compared to fiscal year 2081/082, the number of deaths in road accidents in 082/083 decreased by 3 percent. While 139 people died in 081/082, 125 people died in 082/083, according to SP Rijal, chief of the Nepal Police Highway Safety and Traffic Management Office, Surkhet.
Similarly, while 1,086 people were injured in accidents in the first fiscal year, 1,097 were injured in the most recent year. However, road accidents increased by 23 percent. Compared to the previous fiscal year, vehicle registrations increased by 16 percent in the latest year.
Rijal stated that the increase in road accidents is due to factors such as rising vehicle numbers, the mechanical condition of vehicles, narrow and dilapidated roads, unpaved roads, lack of necessary infrastructure for safety on roads and highways, and the human tendency to think that traffic rules are only for traffic police to follow.
SP Rijal said that, to reduce accidents, awareness programs have been conducted for targeted groups through the Safe Karnali Campaign. Similarly, interactions with stakeholders, mechanical inspections of vehicles, and health check-ups of drivers have been carried out.
He said that drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol and drugs have been brought under legal action. In the past fiscal year, 8,278 various types of awareness programs were conducted.
