With the onset of the rainy season, more than two dozen rural roads in Salyan have become muddy and potholed, causing hardship for commuters.
Most of the unpaved roads built without drainage have become dilapidated due to the mud being washed away by the torrential rains. Due to the delay in road repairs, vehicles have stopped plying in some places, while locals complain that the risk of accidents has increased even on roads that are in operation.
Passengers are forced to walk on foot in some places after the road is blocked. Passengers have even had to push vehicles stuck on the muddy roads themselves. Most of the unpaved roads built by all 10 local levels in the district have deteriorated during the rainy season, affecting daily life and commuting.
Belaram Giri of Patihalna said that the road was cracked by the torrential rains after the rains as the Bagchaur-Patihalna road under construction under the Madan Bhandari Highway. He said that the Patihalna-Bafukhola road has also deteriorated in places, preventing other vehicles except tractors from plying. 'There is a risk of vehicles overturning in potholes,' he said, 'It has become very difficult to even take a sick person out for treatment in the village.'
Ward Chairman Dhan Bahadur Pun said that the problem of vehicles getting stuck and slipping has increased in the Aulbesi-Patke area of the Sallibazar-Bame road section of Bangad Kupinde Municipality-3. According to him, when a vehicle gets stuck, even the passengers have to push it together. He said that the risk of two-wheeler accidents has increased due to the mud.
Local Tej Bahadur Yogi said that due to the lack of drains on the Damachaur-Jhyam and Dahakhola-Guranse roads of Chhatreshwari Rural Municipality, rainwater has flowed on the road and caused cracks in places. He said that even though the municipality has repaired it with a dozer, the road has deteriorated again due to the continuous rain.
According to Ward Chairman Tekraj Pulami of Kalimati Rural Municipality-6, vehicle operation has been halted for a week after landslides, erosion and cracks occurred on the sandy-sandy road. Since then, locals have been forced to use a long, winding route via Mehlakuna in Surkhet. 'Both roads are closed during heavy rains,' he said. 'Then it becomes very difficult to take patients to hospitals, transport agricultural produce to markets, and perform government work.'
According to Ward Chairman of Kalimati Rural Municipality-1, Ravilal Basnet, repairs have begun on Sunday after the Khalanga-Lakshmipur-Kalimati and Luham-Kavra-Kalimati roads were damaged. 'Due to lack of budget, the unpaved roads have not been upgraded,' he said. 'If a patient falls ill at night, they have to be carried on a stretcher for half an hour to reach the road.'
Kapurkot Rural Municipality Chairman Durga Bahadur Pun said that despite the damage to rural roads due to rain, a repair team has been mobilized immediately to facilitate movement and transportation of agricultural produce. According to him, efforts are being made to maintain vehicle operation on most roads despite regular rains.
