Minister for Infrastructure Development Sunil Lamsal on Friday embarked on an on-site inspection of major highways in Karnali.

Having announced that the main road connecting districts and local levels of Karnali would be expanded to double lanes within three years, he has begun an on-site inspection of road projects from Surkhet to Humla.

Minister Lamsal, who arrived in Surkhet on Friday, began his visit by inspecting the Surkhet-Dailekh-Kalikot section of the Karnali Highway.

According to House of Representatives member Ramesh Kumar Sapkota, he will reach Nagma on the Jumla-Kalikot border via Kalikot. After that, he will inspect the Nagma-Gamgadhi road and reach Bajura by land and from there Humla by air to understand the status of the road project.

Minister Lamsal had announced in the House of Representatives on Asad 4 that the main roads of Karnali would be expanded to double lanes within three years. He said that the work of repairing potholes on the roads will now be done through regular maintenance system instead of procrastination. The ministry has stated that he has gone on an on-site monitoring to understand the status of its implementation.

Most of the roads in Karnali are still in a dilapidated condition. The locals, who have been suffering due to landslides during the rainy season and dust during the winter, have been calling the Karnali Highway a 'death road' for a long time.

Of the 232-kilometer-long Karnali Highway stretching from Birendranagar to Jumla, 132 kilometers fall under the jurisdiction of the Road Division Office in Surkhet and 100 kilometers fall under the jurisdiction of the Road Division Office in Jumla.

Regular traffic is being operated on the 93-kilometer road from Nagma to Gamgadhi, the headquarters of Mugu. Out of the proposed 93-kilometer road from Gamgadhi to the northern Chinese border post in Nakchenagla, 18 kilometers of the track have already been opened, while the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the remaining section has been prepared.

According to Engineer Pradeep Narayan Chaudhary, Information Officer of the Road Division Office, Jumla, the construction process has been moved forward by dividing the road into different sections.
