Karnali Province Hospital Surkhet has so far performed 9 successful kidney transplants. The hospital has stated that it has successfully performed 9 kidney transplants in the 5 years since the service began.

The hospital had signed an agreement with the Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplant Center in Kathmandu on Chaitra 10, 2078. The kidney transplant service has been operating accordingly.

The last successful kidney transplant was performed on Ashad 23 on Shivaraj Guindel of Birendranagar Municipality-6, Surkhet, and Ajay Chaudhary of Belauri Municipality-5, Kanchanpur, informed the hospital's information officer Anita Gyawali.

A team of specialist doctors from the Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplant Center, Dr. Dipesh Shrestha, Dr. Shobit Thapa, Dr. Rubasnath Yogi, Dr. Rojan Adhikari, and others participated in the transplant.

The hospital has stated that kidney transplants are being carried out successfully every year. One doctor sent by the hospital for training to work in this service has returned to work after completing his studies, while another is preparing to return after completing his studies in Bhadra. Now, the hospital is also preparing to operate an OPD service for kidney transplants, said Information Officer Gyawali.

Stating that kidney transplants are being carried out successfully at the provincial hospital, Dr. Bikash Khadka, a specialist doctor at the provincial hospital involved in kidney transplants, said that most of the provincial hospital's human resources were deployed in the last kidney transplant performed on Asad 23.

In the past, a team of 30 people from the Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplant Center used to come for the transplant, but this time only 7 people came and all the remaining human resources were deployed from the provincial hospital.

With the success of the kidney transplant, the hospital is preparing the relevant human resources, said Provincial Hospital Director Dr. Ganesh Thapa. He said that the financial burden of the patients has been reduced by performing kidney transplants at the provincial hospital. He said that it is necessary to publicize it.

Rita Pariyar, the wife of kidney transplant patient Shivraj Guindel, said that she had gone to India and Kathmandu several times for treatment but finally got the transplant done in her home district of Surkhet. She said that it was a great relief to receive free treatment.

Karnali Provincial Hospital provides 300,000 rupees per patient for kidney transplants. According to Dr. Bikash Khadka, a specialist doctor at the hospital, kidney transplants are expensive. The transplant alone costs at least 8 to 1 million rupees.
