The surgical services provided by the District Hospital Salyan have been suspended since Saturday. The surgical services at the District Hospital Salyan have been suspended after the completion of the tenure of MDGP specialist doctor Dr. Rahish Koju and medical officer Dr. Suman Yadav, who came from the Nim Simon Institute (NSI) for two months in June and July.
The suspension was due to the lack of specialist and trained doctors after both of them returned. The district hospital had been performing surgeries on pregnant women with complex problems after NSI sent specialist doctors for a decade under the Safe Motherhood Program. In the recent past, after the arrival of MDGP Dr. Koju and Yadav, surgeries were also performed on those with appendix, hernia, hydrocele, and fractured bones.
The service recipients have been affected after the suspension of the surgical services. Pregnant women with the most complex problems are in trouble. After the service was stopped, they are now forced to spend a lot of money to go to Dang, Surkhet, and Nepalgunj for surgery.
On Monday, Purnima Budha of Kalimati Rural Municipality 1 said that her 25-year-old daughter-in-law Nirmala Budha, who was referred to the district hospital for surgery by the health post, had to be turned back halfway and taken to the provincial hospital in Tulsipur. ‘The ambulance cost only 1,000 when coming to the district hospital. It cost 8,000 to take her to Tulsipur,’ she said. ‘I had to return only after reaching halfway when I came to know that the operation had stopped in the district.’
Pimlal Nepali of Bangad Kupinde Municipality 9 said that it was difficult to raise money as he had to take his 10-year-old son to Nepalgunj and Surkhet for a hydrocele surgery. ‘I was unable to get my son treated on time due to lack of money. They were hoping that the operation would be done at the district hospital for 3/4 thousand, now they have to find the cost to take them far away.''
The program implemented by NSI at the district hospital in Salyan for 10 years ended in Ashar and Dr. Koju and Dr. Yadav, who came for work for two months, returned after completing their work. The surgery service was stopped due to the lack of specialist doctors, said Dr. Arjun Budha Magar, head of the health service office in Salyan.
He informed that there was confusion as there was no possibility of sending a specialist doctor even though they requested it from the Karnali province and the federal government immediately.
According to him, three people have already been referred from the hospital when the surgery service was stopped. After the service was stopped, patients sent to the district hospital from health institutions in various municipalities in the district have started going to Nepalgunj, Surkhet, and Dang.
In a month, 10 to 12 pregnant women with complex problems undergo surgery at the district hospital. He said that in the last one month, six people with hernia, appendix, joint and hydrocele problems have undergone surgery. The 15-bed hospital, established in 2044 BS, is operating with 40 beds. Up to 150 patients come to the hospital daily.
