Karnali Province Chief Minister Yamalal Kandel and others have made a collective commitment to reduce accidents. The Chief Minister and others signed the ‘Commitment with my signature to reduce road accidents’ at the Karnali Province Traffic Management Review Seminar held in Birendranagar on Thursday.

Birendranagar Municipality Mayor Mohan Maya Dhakal, Chief District Officer Dharmaraj Joshi, Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Police Headquarters Department Surendra Bahadur Gurung, and Karnali Province Police Office Chief Jayaraj Sapkota, along with representatives of government agencies, have collectively signed the commitment letter with the slogan ‘I will follow traffic rules, reduce road accidents’.

3 to 4 road accidents occur every day in Karnali Province. The data that 1 person is dying every 3 to 4 days was made public at the Karnali Province Traffic Management Review Seminar held in Birendranagar on Thursday.

Chief Superintendent of Police Mukunda Prasad Rijal of the Nepal Police Highway Safety and Traffic Management Police Office said that according to the World Health Organization, 5 to 7 people die every day in Nepal. Similarly, about 3,000 people die annually.

According to SP Rijal, 123 people have died in road accidents in Karnali till the end of Jestha 2082/83. Of which 980 people have been seriously injured. 1,185 have been slightly injured. In this fiscal year, 1,115 people have been involved in road accidents. Similarly, in the fiscal year 2081/82, 968 road accidents resulted in 139 deaths and 702 serious injuries.

Similarly, the Nepal Police Highway Safety and Traffic Management Police Office has data of 112 deaths in the fiscal year 2080/081. In this fiscal year, 472 people have been seriously injured. This fiscal year, 1,086 vehicles were involved in accidents. In the fiscal year 2079/80, 1,311 people died in 549 accidents. 338 people were seriously injured.

In Karnali Province, which has 9,715 kilometers of roads, 1 traffic policeman has to look after 188 vehicles. The province has 220 traffic policemen.

Traffic police in Karnali are forced to work amid low manpower and lack of resources, says Provincial Traffic Police Chief Rijal. ‘The main reason for vehicle accidents here is high speed.’ But there are no standard radar guns and other equipment to control it, he said. ‘This has added challenges to the work. In the event of an accident, Karnali needs a well-equipped rescue van with skilled health workers to immediately rescue the injured.’

Karnali Province Chief Minister Kandel said that the provincial government has realized the need in this regard and pledged to take necessary steps for the management of rescue vans. He also said that the public awareness programs being conducted by the traffic police recently are becoming effective.

Chief Minister Kandel said that due to the roads being dug in a haphazard manner, money is being spent on one hand and people are losing their lives on the other. He said that such a problem has arisen due to the tendency of road work to be done by some person rather than by the engineer.

Pointing out that the justice system itself has become unsafe in recent times, Chief Minister Kandel pledged that the Karnali government will provide all possible support to the police based on the need.

Driver Bhim Bahadur Bohara, who has been operating a long-distance Surkhet-Kathmandu bus for 28 years, was honored at the program. The 52-year-old was honored for his accident-free journey, said SP Mukunda Prasad Rijal, chief of the Nepal Police Highway Safety and Traffic Management Office, Surkhet.
