Saraswati Primary School in Kapurkot Rural Municipality-4 of the district has become studentless. The school has become studentless after students from kindergarten to grade 5 migrated to Tulsipur along with their parents and private schools.
The school, which was established in 2068 BS, had a continuous student population of 1-5 for a few years since its establishment. As migration has decreased every year, last year the number of students in grades 1-5 was zero, while there were only a few children in kindergarten. From this year, kindergarten has also become studentless.
After becoming studentless, the municipality has now prepared to merge the school and has already arranged for the teachers working in the school elsewhere. Although the school is studentless, female teachers and office assistants are currently working in kindergarten. The kindergarten teachers and office assistants go to school at 9:30 am every day and return by 1 pm.
Parents involved in agriculture sent their children to Dang with the intention of sending them to a private and good school and then enrolling them in another nearby school, said Deepa Gharti, a teacher working in child development. She says that even though there are no students, they have been attending school. ‘The government has been conducting admission campaigns, arranging for transportation and midday meals to increase the number of students in schools.’ The programs implemented by the government have been wasted,’ she said.
The school has two teachers, one child development and one office assistant, but last year the municipality had already transferred two teachers to other schools. She says, ‘What should we do when there are no students, we had to be managed elsewhere.’ We had made a demand to the municipality. The municipality has asked us to stay there and attend school, but we have been going to school regularly except on holidays.’ Even though the school has become devoid of students, the furniture and other materials worth lakhs are still there.
Kapurkot Rural Municipality Education Branch Chief Prem Bahadur Bista said that preparations are underway to merge the school. He informed that two teachers working on the municipality’s grant have been arranged to other schools to move the merger process forward. According to him, immediately after the school is merged, the furniture and other materials will be handed over to the merged school, while the school structure will be used for some work.
He informed that although the municipality has been conducting various programs for the convenience and convenience of students, the school near their home is empty due to migration. He said that the geographical location makes it difficult for students to travel and therefore the merger could not be done immediately even though the number of students is low.
