Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has said that the government in Karnali province will now be led by the Congress. Thapa, who reached Surkhet on Monday to address the two-day Karnali province-level gathering of the Congress, said that it is now the turn of the Congress to lead the government in Karnali as per the agreement reached between the Congress and the UML.
‘The UML was in the government with the support of the Congress,’ Thapa said, ‘Now the Congress will lead the government as per the agreement.’ Thapa has said that there will be no compromise on discipline and good governance within the party. He warned that he would take action if evidence is found that a public representative or leader elected by the party is involved in financial irregularities.
‘If evidence is found that our friends are involved in any kind of financial irregularities, the authority does not have to take action, I will take action before the authority,’ he said, ‘No one has the right to defame the party.’ He said that the National Independent Party is not an ‘enemy’ of the Congress but a competitive force. He said that it is the responsibility of the opposition to warn if the government or the party in power is doing wrong. ‘The RSVP is not our enemy, it is a competing party,’ Thapa said, ‘but it is our responsibility to warn if the government’s activities are wrong.’
He said that if there is any kind of interference with the constitution, the country is in danger of going back to instability. ‘The constitution that was brought after so much pain should not be turned upside down,’ Thapa said, ‘If the constitution is weakened, the country will go towards disaster and the citizens will have to suffer the pain.’
The program was attended by leaders of the Karnali Provincial Parliamentary Party, ministers, MPs, candidates from the last election, and municipal heads and deputy heads from across the province. Thapa said that now the party needs work and results more than speeches, and instructed the cadres to work in a way that the people can feel. ‘We need work now, we need results,’ he said.
