The ginger research program in Kapurkot Rural Municipality-3 of the district has been affected due to the lack of staff. The ginger research program has been affected due to the lack of staff.

The ginger research program in Kapurkot has been working on seven projects including the production of new varieties of ginger and turmeric used as spices, disease and pest management, and soil testing. Due to the lack of staff, the program has not been able to produce sufficient quantities of improved seeds as per the project and has not been able to introduce new programs.

The ginger research program, which has been conducting programs in all seven provinces across the country, has not been able to deploy technicians in the field as required. Dr. Ghanshyam Bhandari, head of the ginger research program in Salyan, Kapurkot, said that the work could not be done according to the target due to the lack of staff.

Under the program, the office has a staff of four doctors, five technicians, four assistants, three office assistants, an accountant, a driver and others, but so far there are only eight employees, including one doctor and five technicians.

‘The program should have a doctor who is an expert in new variety production, pest management, soil testing, and crop breeding. I am a pest specialist, but I have to look after all the work including new variety production, pest control, soil testing. If all four doctors were there, they would have brought new projects. Everyone would have worked in a hurry. Since there are no doctors as per the requirement, it is difficult to reach the target,’ he said, ‘Although there are no doctors as per the staffing, under the program, so far we are conserving 105 local varieties of haledo, 63 ginger, and 12 black varieties of haledo. Under which, we have produced new varieties of ginger, Kapurkot 1, Kapurkot 2 and Kapurkot 1, Kapurkot 2, and have been able to expand them and reach the farmers.''

As the problem of root rot disease in ginger is widespread and farmers are facing problems, after a long time of effort, we have succeeded in advancing the disease control process by producing a disease-resistant virus from the laboratory. Dr. Bhandari informed.

'It takes two years to produce a new variety of ginger and turmeric. Till now, we should have produced many new varieties of ginger and turmeric, but due to the lack of doctors as per the quota and the compulsion of one doctor to look after all the work in all seven provinces of the country, and that too alone, we have not been able to work as expected,' he said. 'Although there are not enough vacancies, we are currently doing what we can.''

He informed that after repeatedly demanding vacancies, there is hope that the demand will be fulfilled this time. He said that recently, work is underway to establish resource centers in all seven provinces, and due to the shortage of positions, the program is being carried forward in collaboration with the Agricultural Development Offices and Agricultural Knowledge Centers of the respective districts.
