The Khalanga Bazaar area of Musikot Municipality, the district headquarters of Rukum West, has been facing problems due to the lack of waste management. For the last four months, garbage has not been collected from the market.

Due to the lack of waste management, the Khalanga Bazaar, the district headquarters, looks beautiful from a distance, but the situation is not the same once you enter the market. The municipality estimates that about 10 tons of garbage are generated daily from the main market and residential areas under Musikot-1 and 5.

Due to the lack of garbage collection, not only has the smell spread in the squares, squares and roadsides here, but the market has also become ugly. The residents of the city are demanding that the government take appropriate steps immediately. Local Belmati Pariyar said that the inability to collect garbage for months like this is the government's weakness. 'Can the government say that it cannot do it if it wants to?' We should have taken measures! We have sent them to ward no. 1 so that they can avoid such problems,' she said.

The municipality has been managing waste in Ward No. 2, Satipole, for the past 12 years, but the locals have been obstructing waste disposal since last December.  Although the municipality has tried to manage waste in the same place, discussions about alternatives have not been successful, says Mayor Mahendra KC.

'The land in Satipole is in the name of the municipality.  But the locals have stopped waste disposal, saying that they are affected by the waste accumulating there.  Even though discussions were held with stakeholders about many alternative places, no conclusion was reached,' he said, 'Now we are building a landfill site in Nipane, Ward No. 1. It will take some time to complete this work, but we are preparing to see if waste can be disposed of there from next Asad.'

The municipality believes that if the Sistole Lamp (garbage disposal site) that has been under construction in Nipane for the past three years can be further organized, this will be the most suitable place. The daily waste is accumulating in the market area, and many people are burning it near their homes. Doing so is polluting the environment. However, local Biraj Gautam complains that they are forced to burn waste. He said that since there is no place to immediately dispose of the waste, they burn the waste that can be burned and try to reuse it as much as possible.

However, public health experts say that burning waste indiscriminately in this way will seriously affect the environment and human health. A better alternative is to properly classify the waste and process it for reuse. However, Mayor KC said that the municipality lacks technical expertise and budget for this. Stating that despite requesting the Karnali provincial government for this last year, there was no support, he pledged that the municipality itself would start some efforts from the next fiscal year.
