The Bhagwati Women's Savings and Credit Cooperative Society in the district has been embezzled. The savings made by women of Chandannath-8 and 9 at the rate of Rs 100 per month have not been accounted for for the past 9 years. Local women have demanded an account of the savings. There is no cooperative now, nor are the structures built for the cooperative left. 'Cooperative funds are being embezzled indiscriminately,' said cooperative member Banchu Sejuwal, 'who will investigate?' The cooperative's working area includes wards 1 to 9 of the former Talium VDC and wards 8 and 9 of the current Chandannath. More than 600 women are affiliated with the cooperative. The then Women's Development Office had built a cooperative building in the village by investing Rs 1.2 million. Women's activism was also good. The building had furniture. Now, the documents and important files of the cooperative have stopped being found. The locals are worried that the officials are also out of contact.
Women from Sridhuska, Talium, Rokayabada, Kotila, Jatibhid, Bayalkatia and Syalbada had collected the money. 'We saved the money we earned by selling firewood, and we also kept it in the cooperative after selling grains and livestock,' said Sejuwal. 'The money we saved has given us nothing but pain.' She said that she hopes to get double the amount after the period ends. The woman is worried that it has become difficult to get the principal amount.
Asauji Kami of Chandannath-7 has saved 79 thousand rupees. It seems that interest was added to her passbook even up to 2073 BS. Since then, her money has not been accounted for. ‘The officials and employees had promised to get double the amount,’ she said, ‘Now the cooperative is not there, but it is difficult to meet the officials.’
According to a local goldsmith, she said that she saved after the employees of the cooperative told her that she would get double the amount after depositing the amount. ‘Some of the people who deposited the amount have died,’ she said, ‘They have saved a minimum of 33 thousand to one hundred thousand rupees.’ The cooperative had its own building. The cooperative had sewn clothes for the women. They were doing work from sewing clothes to buying beans. Now the building is abandoned. The women have reached the district administration to create an environment for returning the money.
The judicial committee of Chandannath Municipality has not heard the case. Now the officials and employees are out of contact. ‘The building is like a public toilet,’ said Banche, ‘our money is not traceable.’ Maya Khatri, who was a Nepali from Goma Dangi and Rajpura, became the president of the cooperative. Jayalakshmi Bohara is the vice-president, Kamaldevi Rawal is the secretary, and Chaitu Giri is the treasurer. Bishnu Bahadur Rawal and Junkali Sunar were employees.
If the cooperative does not return the money, all the savers have decided to protest on the streets. Chandannath-8 ward president Rup Bahadur Rokaya said that Bhagwati cooperative is an old organization and that he did not understand the current situation. ‘We will discuss the current situation of the cooperative, the status of the office bearers, and the amount of irregularities,’ he said. How much savings does the cooperative have? How much is the loan? How much interest will the members receive? They have demanded that the concerned bodies take the initiative to account for all this.
