The District Disaster Management Committee has recommended the reconstruction of two schools damaged due to unseasonal rains in Kalikot.
The reconstruction of the under-construction building with playground of Rama Secondary School in Narharinath Rural Municipality-3 and the Sundar Basic School in Rampur, Raskot Municipality-1 was seen as necessary after the landslide collapsed.
The committee meeting held on Sunday decided to recommend the reconstruction of both schools to the concerned bodies along with a police report, informed Chief District Officer and Committee Chairman Gokarna Raj Suwal. According to him, the damage to the school building and playground has caused problems in teaching and learning, so the local government, Ministry of Social Development and Ministry of Education have been requested for reconstruction. He also mentioned that necessary precautions should be taken to prevent further damage.
The meeting has directed all bodies to mobilize resources and equipment to reduce the risk of disasters such as wildfires, fires, storms and lightning, keeping in mind the upcoming dry season. In addition, the Road Department has been urged to keep heavy equipment ready to remove possible landslides on the Karnali Highway and other corridor areas.
The decision to hand over the materials purchased by the local levels for disaster relief to the nearest police office has become controversial. District President of the Nepal Red Cross Society, Bal Prasad Sanjyal, expressed dissatisfaction with the decision and said that it is necessary to strengthen local emergency centers.
The meeting was attended by the District Coordination Committee, local level chiefs, security agencies, political parties, and representatives of various government and non-government organizations. It has also been decided to purchase rubber boats to make rescue operations effective in cases of flooding in the Karnali and Tila rivers, for which cooperation will be carried out between various local levels.
Similarly, in order to effectively disseminate information related to disasters, local levels have decided to make public the information issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, and the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology through their official channels, informed Assistant Chief District Officer Janak Sharma. In addition, the process of identifying disaster-affected households and preparing a beneficiary list will be taken forward.
