The body of 16-year-old Inisha BK, who died about three weeks ago, has not been recovered yet. Inisha's body has been in the morgue of Karnali Provincial Hospital for 18 days. The family is adamant that the body will not be identified until a fair and credible investigation is conducted.
On February 23, Inisha was rescued unconscious from a nearby community forest by the police while walking from home to school. On the same day, the police arrested a 16-year-old teenager from the scene on charges of rape. Based on the statement of the arrested teenager, the police arrested three more people on February 24 and are continuing the investigation. However, the truth of the incident has not been revealed yet.
Protests and pressure programs are ongoing across the country demanding justice for Inisha. Inisha's parents have accused the police of delaying in finding out the truth of the incident even after 18 days of their daughter's death. Immediately after the incident, the victim's family filed a complaint against all four arrested persons for manslaughter and rape, claiming that the incident occurred after gang rape.
Following the family's complaint, a team led by forensic expert Arbin Shakya from Bheri Hospital in Banke conducted a post-mortem of the body at the provincial hospital. According to the police, the post-mortem report stated that Inisha died due to severe injuries to her genitals caused by forcible physical contact and caused excessive bleeding. However, the victim's family has expressed dissatisfaction with the post-mortem report itself. 'I have had doubts from the beginning, I have doubts about the post-mortem report after finding my daughter in such a state,' Inisha's mother Tila said, 'Not only this report, but if other reports are similar, we will launch a protest.'
Father Indra Bahadur, who came to Nepal after the news of his daughter's death, said that his leave from the company was about to end. "It has been 18 days since my daughter's death, they are still saying that the report is coming," he said. "The police have said that the case process will move forward only after all the reports are received." He said that there is doubt that the daughter will get justice. The family says that the police have not yet openly informed about the incident. "It seems that the incident is becoming more mysterious," Indra Bahadur said. "The report has also been shown as normal, it is not known what investigations have been carried out. I am starting to wonder if my daughter will not get justice."
The district police, however, has claimed that the investigation into the incident has reached the final stage. Four teams of Nepal Police, including the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), are investigating the incident. District Police Chief Superintendent of Police Sudhir Raj Shahi said that the entire investigation has been completed. "The forensic report will also come in two to three days," he said. "So far, the postmortem, CIB and digital reports have come." Shahi said that the investigation will be completed once the toxicological, viscera and bio-serological reports come.
Police have stated that without an investigation into Inisha's incident, many speculations and unconfirmed information on social media have hindered the investigation. Making fabricated details public without understanding the reality is causing pain to the general public and the family, and is also causing problems in the investigation, said Superintendent of Police Shahi.
