Kotwada Health Post in Narharinath-1 has been declared the first nutrition-friendly health institution in the district. Kotwada Health Post was declared the first nutrition-friendly health institution in the district on Sunday with the slogan ‘Healthy, happy and prosperous families, our concern, effective multi-sectoral nutrition services, people’s rights’.
Kotwada was declared the first nutrition-friendly health institution in Kalikot after achieving more than 90 percent success in 15 out of 16 indicators of the nutrition-friendly declaration, said the post in-charge Sushila Bista. ‘Malnutrition has been eliminated in the service area of the health institution,’ she said. ‘Support and coordination from all parties are necessary for its sustainability.’
In the service area of Kotwada Health Post, 15 people were malnourished three years ago, but last year it had come down to 10. This year, the number has come down to zero. The Kotwada Health Post, established in 2047, had a malnutrition rate of 3 percent in its service area two years ago, but the organization has helped reduce malnutrition by providing four meals a day, breastfeeding, pregnancy checkups, and supporting malnourished children.
For the declaration of a nutrition-friendly health facility, 90 percent of pregnant women in Kotwada undergo 8 prenatal checkups, 90 percent of pregnant women take 180 tablets of Aran tablets throughout the pregnancy period, 100 percent of women give birth in a health facility, and children born in a health facility are breastfed within 1 hour.
Similarly, 97 percent of children aged 6 to 59 months take vitamin A capsules, 91 percent of children aged 1 to 59 months take deworming medicine, regular growth monitoring of children is carried out, and 100 percent of children registered for growth monitoring are exclusively breastfed from birth to 6 months.
Similarly, Kotwada was declared nutrition-friendly based on the indicators that all children were fed complementary foods after 6 months, that there were zero low-birth-weight children, that 100 percent of children were fully vaccinated, that all children received full childhood vitamins, that all children were given zinc tablets and rehydration solution, and that adolescents were given iron folic tablets for 26 weeks, said Katak Bahadur Mahat, the nutrition focal person at the Health Service Office involved in the monitoring.
According to him, while about 4 percent of children in Kalikot district are malnourished, malnutrition is low in Narharinath Rural Municipality. Malnutrition has not been seen in Ward 1 Kotwada. Stating that the number of deaths due to diarrhea has come down to zero after Kalikot district was declared open defecation-free, he said that a nutrition-friendly campaign should also be conducted throughout the district.
Village Municipality Vice-Chairman Kamal Kumar Shah expressed his pride that Narharinath-1 Kotwada Health Post has been declared the first nutrition-friendly health facility in the district and pledged that the municipality will allocate necessary programs and budget for sustainability.
