The hailstorm that fell on Friday afternoon has damaged the winter crops of wheat, barley and vegetables planted by farmers in Sallam, Dayakot, Sindhuri and other places in Kapurkot Rural Municipality-5 of Salyan.

The hailstorm has broken and destroyed the ears of wheat and barley planted in the farmers' side fields, while the vegetable crops have also been destroyed. The farmers are worried after the hailstorm has destroyed the wheat and barley that were at the time of ripening.

Yam Kumar Basnet, a farmer from Khali and former ward chairman, said that the wheat and barley crops planted in five ropanis have been destroyed. "The crop could have been brought in by the end of Chait. The hailstorm destroyed it before it could ripen," he said.

Another farmer from Khali, Bhishma Budha, said that the tomato crops that were ready to be transplanted and the vegetables planted in the carrot field were damaged. He said that even the orange and lemon flowers have all fallen.

He informed that the hailstorm has damaged more than 50 percent of the wheat and barley crops planted in the fields. He said, "A bunch of sorghum was enough to plant on three to four ropanis of land. We would have earned about 2-3 lakhs. Everything is over."

Homraj Khadka, ward chairman of Kapurkot Rural Municipality-5, said that the hailstorm that fell in the afternoon damaged the winter crops of many farmers in the ward. He said that there is no data on the extent of the damage.
